After all the hard work surrounding the August 2009 Off-Price Specialist Show, the overall consensus is that it was a total success... and it's far from over, as the effects of such a large-scale buyer turnout and buyer / seller networking extravaganza will undoubtedly shape the future of shows to come. These are interesting times indeed, made more interesting by the fact that existing partnerships, alliances, organizations, and teams that have made the Wholesale Industry what it is today are being forced into a sort of fast-forward evolutionary process. New relationships in the business are generating buzz, and a new level of expectation is being created right in front of us all. Are you just watching the show, or are you a part of the unfolding story?

With a total attendance of over 10,000 at the recent August 2009 Off-Price Specialist Show, and over 450 exhibitors showing off their best merchandise, there was an atmosphere of high-energy activity that resulted in the formation of intense, exciting, and fresh new buzz over the steals-and-deals in the Closeout and Off-price Industry. While many of the doomsday-types predicted a rapid cooling period for the Retail and Wholesale business that would lead to catastrophic results for anyone who dared to get involved in such a volatile and dangerous market… the people who make up the Wholesale and Retail sector know that the show must go on, and it’s really up to us to determine whether that show is going to be a comedy, a tragedy, or a gut-wrenching drama…

There were a lot of smiles at the show, and reports from the field were all rather upbeat and similarly positive about the great turnout, the attitude of the buyers who showed up, and the unexpectedly good order rate on the sales floor. For some sellers it was not a matter of trying to capture the attention of buyers, but instead a matter of trying to get the orders filled out quickly, so they could give everyone the attention they deserved!

“It was nice to meet a lot of new customers and future friends. Thanks to everyone that was patient enough to wait in line for our product!”

Kenneth Delaney

Bordan Shoe Company in Los Angeles

One of the truly surprising features of the show was a huge focus on the low price-point merchandise that was being put right next to luxury-brand goods. In an economy that seems to be shifting with the winds, and a lot of dollar-pinching going on… innovation sometimes takes place in some unlikely ways. While the Luxury Market’s share of the consumer pool is slipping downward, the Budget and Discounted Goods Industry is seeing tremendous growth. Of course, this is what anyone would expect to see during a financial pinch, but what’s become one of the hot topics of the business is the fact that these two areas of retail –- which were once miles apart — are now rubbing shoulders and competing on the same sales floor. In a brilliant move, the sellers and distributors have adapted to the changes, and made the move to put these high-end goods to the test by offering choice to their customers that was not available in the past.

“My lower price point items performed better than the upscale goods that we are known for!” Kathy Chikato

Commerce, CA–based DLM Off Price Specialists

Another point to consider is the influx of new vendors who showed up to announce their goods. According to David Lapidos, Senior Vice President for the Off Price Show, conversations with attendees revealed that everyone was quite able to find what they needed at this event. A good mix of general merchandise, specialty items, and everything from bulk costume jewelry to sports wear and athletic gear made their presence felt and heard at the show. Wait a minute… wasn’t this supposed to a bad year for everyone in the business? Shouldn’t we be slowing things down, and waiting for the right time to promote our products and services again? Mr. Lapidos added that “All who attended will re-affirm that this industry is very much alive.”

It looks like the slow and cautious strategy couldn’t be more out of tune with the sound of people filling the convention center… and the songs of victory that were being hummed by happy vendors at this event. Winter merchandise made a huge hit on the sales floor, and the variety of goods in all categories on offer was a clear sign that making your move sooner — rather than later — is the only strategy to consider. This show experienced a 10% increase in buyer attendance and an equal increase in exhibit space from last year’s show, so there’s little doubt that the following shows will yield similar results. Remember, this is just the beginning… and if you missed out on the amazing August event, you’ll be pleased to know that another chance is coming up fast. For information regarding the upcoming Off Price Show on February 14-17, 2010 at the Sands Expo & Convention Center, Hall G, Las Vegas, you can follow the link we’ve provided. Happy wholesaling to everyone who made the August show such a success!

The news right now is that anyone who is looking for amazing deals can find them online. Wholesalers that are also looking for a break during the economic tough times can look towards companies that source quality fashion goods... and bring them directly to you, along with a winning attitude in outstanding service. You're looking for the companies that listen to customer feedback, anticipate the changes in the market, and continue to lead the industry by making the needed changes that smaller buyers demand, in order to stay competitive, so there's no reason to wait... read on to find out where the action is!

If you need further evidence of a market that is promoting successful returns for the ones who are coming up with new answers to the old questions, there’s actually more answers out there than there were just a few months ago. Let’s think about the leading wholesale distributors that are offering big benefits to retailers during these tough economic times. Some national online wholesalers are offering free shipping to all new customers, and helping small businesses that are looking for new and improved ways to dial-in their efficiency and crank up their competitiveness in the market. You might even be surprised to find out that top-quality apparel, handbags, and fashion accessories are being put up against the goods carried by larger department stores, at considerable savings! This new angle on the perceived value of branded goods is creating a huge opportunity for those who want to break into the market.

Since consumers everywhere are making changes to their spending habits — and the fashion industry has felt the pinch of profit margins slashed by falling sales volumes — it’s become more important than ever for quality products to become available to small vendors, since they are one of the last links in the chain that ends with the consumer.

On top of that, many of the leading wholesale distributors are forming partnerships and relationships with exclusive designers and manufacturers who produce goods that won’t show up anywhere else. This means your search for unique and fresh fashions for men, women, and children are all in front of you, and only a mouse click away. It also means that those popular and high-demand items like bags, belts, and other fashion accessories can be found at discounted wholesale prices, through your favorite online distributor!

Wholesale distributors like Shopforbags.com are sensitive to the needs of the smaller vendors. Minimum orders start at only $100, and buyers can mix and match designer products to create the perfect order for their business! There are more than 1,000 fashion products available, and all orders are shipped within 48 hours, which will be perfect for those who want to avoid delays in restocking their shelves as the products take off. It’s nice to know that you can have a friend in the business who will offer discounts on orders that were only available to the larger outlets in the past, but are now easily within your reach. This trend is gaining momentum, and the choices will invariably broaden as the market grows into its new position in the ever-changing global wholesale and retail community.

Other savvy distributors can also be found through TopTenWholesale.com Twitter account by droves of loyal retailers, and it would pay to look for the ones who employ online-only incentives that come in many forms, such as a current offer to receive free shipping for using a checkout code for all new accounts… or an e-coupon that applies credit to the next order. It’s no doubt that new incentives will manifest themselves over time, if you just want to wait. However, new competitors will also emerge from the shadows, so what are you waiting for?

As this Summer begins heating things up, it would be a wise idea to think ahead to those September travel plans, as you search for and meet the best representatives of China's booming leather industry. All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE), China International Footwear Fair (CIFF), & Moda Shanghai 2009 are getting prepared for a monstrous event that caters to you, the wholesaler.

I’m tired of bad news. It’s all over the headlines, and it’s all there ever seems to be when I pull up a text-based search about ‘China’ in any one of the major search engines these days. However, for all the bad news that is being generated, there is a lot of good stuff buried somewhere deep within, if you’re willing to dig for it.

One of the things I have noticed is a general streamlining of things in the foreign trade business; in the area of trade fairs, a sort of cost-cutting effort to trim some fat from trade shows that were usually hosted in multiple venues… multiple cities… and required a lot of legwork on the part of the visitors to get something accomplished. This year, the reality of the CPC missing its elusive 8% GDP goal — by a mile — is pretty clear, and it means that once-headstrong wholesaler juggernaut China is responding with a more intelligent approach to the way business is done, as global market contraction steadily continues.

I can hear the collective sighs of relief, from people who have had more than enough of poorly-executed trade fairs and haphazardly-organized shows of the past. After all, business is still business… but it will be nice to know that efficiency will be of greater value this time around.

Companies seeking to enter the China market may have a golden opportunity to see and be seen by some of the biggest names in leather-related manufacture and production in the world. All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) will be in its 11th year, as it continues to bring all major Chinese producers, distributors, and buyers together into one massive show space. This is a very big event, and it should be noted that last year turned out over 15,700 buyers (over 13,800 from mainland China) and media representatives from around the world. China International Footwear Fair (CIFF) & Moda Shanghai 2009 will also be represented, since they are major co-organizers of the event.

From the press release:

“China International Footwear Fair and Moda Shanghai 2009 will be one of the leading trade shows of its kind in Shanghai. Organized with a joint venture of APLF Limited and China Leather Industry Association, the event will take place concurrent to the All China Leather Exhibition (ACLE) 2009. The event will display an extensive range of fashion goods including leather garments, handbags, travel-ware, and fashion accessories, giving buyers an overall preview of fashion total-look. China International Footwear Fair (CIFF) and Moda Shanghai 2009 is a must attend event for professionals from footwear industry.”

Another important point to consider is the fact that 22 group pavilions have already been confirmed, and pavilion groups from Australia, Brazil, Ethiopia, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and USA, have been slated to participate in ACLE and CIFF 2009.

Sounds pretty good, eh? There is still a chance to book a spot now, and it always pays to be early when dealing with the logistics of international travel. For some specifics on getting the info you need to make your reservations, I have listed some of the vital information below:

News headlines are lighting up like Christmas trees, as the news of China’s Green Dam Youth Escort Project are filling PC manufacturers in the overseas trade markets with dread. In a recent report first issued by the Wall Street Journal, details of a new initiative fired off by the CPC (Communist Party of China) has put a full-scale mandate in effect that requires all PC manufacturers to ship every one of those brand-new PC’s slated for export into China with mysterious software from Henan-based Jinhui Computer System Engineering Co. — pre-installed on the hard drive — by July 01 this year.

Yes, that’s the beginning of next month. No, there wasn’t much advance notice.

It’s a rather tall order, considering that PC makers supplied more than 40 million new PC’s to China last year (New York Times) and it’s anticipated that the world’s largest online community (over 300 million to date) are going to keep buying new computers. It begs the question: who will supply these new PC’s to the Chinese market? I’m willing to bet that PC makers like the bruised-and-battered DELL (Ouch. Wasn’t it a 34% reduction in PC sales last month?) would like to know the answer, immediately.

This spells big trouble for the folks who have to go back into the warehouses to open up sealed boxes and install the new software, which is already being decried as “unstable, ineffective, and problematic…” even before Beijing’s unrealistic rollout date. According to the Beijing News, the program is “less than stellar” in its ability to filter content.

Immediate backlash notwithstanding, pundits are already stepping up to the plate, as they attempt to defend the decision by the central government. In a related statement, Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang made it clear:

“The purpose of this is to effectively manage harmful material for the public

and prevent it from being spread.”

Screen capture of Green Dam warning page.

While all of this may sound deviously Orwellian in nature, it should come as no surprise to the crafty wholesale / retail virtuosos (that would be YOU!) that a severe, near-crippling bottleneck in the system introduces an opportunity to pick up some product that does no good to anyone, as it sits in containers and warehouses gathering dust… and reaching the end of its technology cycle, before resulting in a profit for the manufacturers. In other words, there may be some leveraging power for those who want to help move the goods, and this could be a boom year in the domestic wholesale PC business, despite all the hand-wringing from the likes of political activists, to the PC industry giants that have been stopped in their tracks by this sudden boondoggle in the path of Q3 sales for the year.

Checking out some Top10 results like these can reveal a soon-to-be exploding market in Personal Computer liquidation. Get in there while you have the chance, and don’t be surprised as the market swings wildly from one end of the pendulum to the other.

Whether this thing really becomes a problem in the long-run is unclear at this point, but until the politicos can resolve things from the highest diplomatic levels, PC makers the world over might be heard saying: “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a Dam… but what will you give me for these computers?”

Search Engine Marketing 1 > Search For Measurable Returns & Performance-based Ads

Business owners who source products online and buy B2B from manufacturers, wholesalers and merchandise resellers know exactly what they want from their search efforts:

· The right business-useful information,

· Focused on their own product/industry category,

· That returns leads and resources they can use right now.

In a recent survey of more than 500 professionals (The Vertical Search – B2B – Report 2009 from e-Consultancy and Convera), here’s what business users said:

1. 67% go to vertical search engines to find the information they need quickly;

2. 65% go vertical (industry-focused) sites for their B2B searches because they get more relevant information;

3. 64% find a “significant benefit” — for their workflow and business needs — to searching at vertical sites that focus on their specific business interests.

And here is “where the rubber meets the road” …

Business-to-business sellers not only know what buyers want from their online search time, but they know exactly where they will put more of their marketing money:

On more performance-based online ads, rather than traditional display advertising.

And why:

Search advertising offers measurable returns and clear sink-or-swim results that are vital to budgets and accountability during an economic downturn.

Measurable Returns Becoming Ad Criteria for 2009:

· 78% of advertisers plan to raise their spending on CPA (cost-per-action or acquired customer) ad formats this year

· 67% plan to increase spending on cost-per-lead (CPL) ads

· Nearly 50% will increase spending on cost-per-click (CPC) ads

· Only 29% say their spending on CPM (cost-per-1000 impressions or views of a display ad) will increase this year

Source: The Vertical Search – B2B – Report 2009 (e-Consultancy; sponsored by Convera)

GET HIGHER ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) AT INDUSTRY–VERTICAL AD NETWORKS

· Vertical 1st: See the 64-to-67% of business searchers, above, who told e-Consultancy/Convera why they go to vertical search engines first: To find the most relevant results to meet their business information needs … and to find it quickly.

· Haystacks vs. Needles: Consumer-focused search engines (like Google, Yahoo!, Microsoft Live Search) do an excellent job of sorting an overload of web data into huge haystacks of results. But business users seek refined needles in those info stacks. The search for refined, filtered, specific results can be delivered only by engines that drill down into an industry or business segment, a verticalized product supply chain, or a professional interest sector.

· Reach Customers Closer To Buyer Decisions:

Vertical SE's Reach Buyer Prospects

Source: JPC, Inc., Top Ten Wholesale, Forbes

· Bump Up Conversions By Wholesale Measures on Vertical Sites. Online marketers in the retail and direct-to-consumer world have straightforward conversion metrics: Click-through Rates from search ads; Percent of First-Time Web Visitors who Set Up a Shopping Cart and Convert to Purchase; Dollar Value/Frequency of Purchases; Percentage of Return Visitors and Conversion to Sale.

However, buyer behavior and purchase decisions at Manufacturer, Wholesaler and Distributor levels of the product supply chain require more time and decision-makers than retail consumers. And conversion measures for marketing by wholesalers are more sophisticated than simply counting up sales.

Wholesale conversion metrics might include:
o Prospects or Leads generated;
o Requests for quotes, rates, contract information
o Site Registrations to access directories, product specs, catalog, auctions
o Subscription to seller news feeds, product and price alerts
o Download of the seller’s technical White Papers or Industry Newsletters
o Completing Contact or Query Forms at the site
o Requesting additional product information or contact by a Sales Associate
o Lifetime Value Measures (based on customer retention rates)
o Comment or Interaction with other members of the seller’s community

Vertical-Industry search networks talk to a pre-qualified self-selected universe of prospects. So, Manufacturer/Wholesaler/Distributor marketing on vertical search sites tends to deliver better prospects who are closer to wholesale-defined conversions. (Some industry insiders peg vertical search marketing conversions at 10-to-15 times the rates at consumer search sites.)

· Better Conversion Rates = Higher Return on Ad Spend:

Higher Return on Ad Spend

So much advice on Going Green … Choosing a Sustainable Lifestyle … Becoming Locavore (eating foods from regional producers and family farms) … all that good advice focuses on individual actions. But, when it comes to Children’s Toys for the approaching holiday season, or shopping green, individual customers have definite Safety, Sustainability and Product Recall issues on their minds. And that consumer demand converts up the supply chain to a greener shade of product quality and product safety vetting. Greening of the wholesale apparel supply chain goes right down to fabric fibers and cut of the clothes. (More on this in an article linked below.)Here are tips, tools and information sources that buyers and resellers from all points in the wholesale-to-retail chain can use to meet growing collective customer demands for greener and safer products.

Staying On Top of Product Safety

We’ve all read about children’s toy or product recalls from the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Warnings and injury reports over toxic toy paints, chemical contamination in materials, and toy components that became choking or ingestion hazards almost scuttled toy sales in 2007. But those widely publicized episodes didn’t start just last year; there are records of personal injury lawsuits brought by distraught parents as far back as 2004. And CSPC or licensed manufacturer safety recalls continue to this day.

Bashing imports or blaming human error — “negligent parents” for poor supervision; young children themselves for “inappropriate product use” — just does not cut it. Dive into the muddy waters of Limited Product Liability disclaimers, such as Placing This Baby Seat On A High Shelf With the Baby In It Voids All Claims Against the Manufacturer. Such attempts to limit product liability from user stupidity never hold up in court if a basic design or manufacturing defect comes up.

Design defects did factor into recent retailer recalls of approximately 1,000,000 convertible baby bassinets because of strangulation hazards; as well as the death of a boy in a now-recalled soccer net that could have been avoided if the grid pattern on the netting had smaller openings that child athletes’ heads could not poke through.

There lies the responsibility thread: The soccer nets are made in China, but the CPSC directed focus on the importer, a sports equipment manufacturer, for the design defect. As Beth Pinsker noted on consumer interest blog “Wallet Pop” …

Most of the problems are due to design flaws and corruption in the supply chain. The Washington Post just detailed how some of these flaws come to light through the case of the bassinet recall. Some of this is China’s fault and some of it isn’t. But the fact that most of the children’s products that we buy are manufactured in China says something about the oversight corporations are giving to these items.

Pinsker advised parents to be “extremely cautious” and “vigilant” about products they buy for their kids using “awareness” as the first line of defense.

DIY Wholesaler Quality Control. Importers, licensed manufacturers and even retail chains need to hawk their own quality control, noted Forbes editor Robyn Meredith, who should know as Global Editor for India and China and works from Singapore. Meredith:

American companies who buy Chinese goods and put American brand names on them should be aware that the import market is still Buyer Beware. … Thirty percent of the world’s toys came from China in 2000; but by 2005, 75% of ALL toys were Made in China. And the reality is that wholesalers and resellers must do-it-yourself track import product safety.

That means product sourcing with established toy wholesalers and importers, and taking a self-protective interest in sales contract clauses detailing quality assurance, defective merchandise shipments and refusals.

Even big name licensed goods retailers have to do it themselves. Thousands of Walt Disney Company “Pirates of the Caribbean” sleeping bags and “Tinker Bell” magic wands were recalled from Disney Stores because of contamination and excessive levels of lead paint. Disney took back control and product safety testing from its 220 Disney Store outlets previously run by Children’s Place, after discovering the problem in random safety tests conducted in 2007.

Disney requires its manufacturers to test each product for lead before the items are shipped. Since September 2007, owners of the rights to Magic Kingdom and Minnie and Mickey Mouse have independently tested toys featuring its characters that are sold by retailers other than Disney. (That testing move was motivated by last year’s recall of millions of Mattel, Inc. toys from the Disney-Pixar movie “Cars” that were believed to contain lead paint.)

Toy Safety Clearinghouse. Check a major toy retailer’s clearinghouse for recall information and safety news at Toys R Us .

Hawk the CPSC Site. The Consumer Product Safety Commission can only operate “after-the-fact” … after receiving complaints and conducting tests. It does post safety information at the CPSC site and publicizes recalls widely, especially before major toy-buying holiday seasons.
