Christmas will be a time for careful planning, and those who go beyond party supplies and general merchandise will be growing their customer base, rather than reducing it... without taking wild swings in the dark, or being uninformed about what trends are making their appearance this year.

With the US Dollar shrinking rapidly, and a seemingly never-ending series of contradictions regarding the instability of the economy hitting all of the news feeds… it’s easy to see that this holiday season will present some interesting challenges to the wholesale and retail specialists that are trying to tie it all together in time for the major shopping wrap-up of 2009. General merchandise has always been a market with its upswings and downturns, but this time the numbers to focus upon are the forecasts for what kind of money will be spent by the consumer this season in specific areas like Christmas and party supplies… and how you can apply some smart spending of your own towards meeting their specialized demands, without resorting to too much guesswork.

It looks like the ones who research the trends and the global news are going to win. Fortunately for the number-crunchers, there are a variety of resources available for those who want to sink their teeth into the dizzying piles of numbers and spreads that break down consumer spending patterns, regional areas of distinction, and pretty much anything else that you can think of… but how do you filter out all the noise, and find the resources that make sense to you? What’s being offered by manufacturers to your market category? Where can you turn to, without spending all of your time going bleary-eyed from the bluish-cold glow of your PC monitor, and without making you feel like your world has been reduced to a 1680 x 1050 display? Okay, maybe that last part was really just describing my own situation… but you get the idea.

Since every one of you in the wholesale and retail biz are as different as the customers you serve, I’ll try to bring up a few of the main traditional focal points, with another nice and neat TopTen list of popular off-price products being outsourced this holiday season:

Accessories… there’s never been a better time to start carrying a full range of accessories, from classic to outrageous. With prices dipping and once-successful export companies in China feeling the pinch… you might get a lot for a little, if you apply the right tactics in getting a piece of that surplus at a price you’re happy with. Your customers will be even happier when they see how easy you make it for them to find what they want.

Apparel… I’ve actually noticed some military-grade bags and other small items that are hitting the racks – with the minimal addition of brands and logos – here in China, because there are a few companies that were making actual military gear… who now find themselves without contracts. Guess who’s going to be rocking the desert-camo cargo pants this year? I’ll be one of them. Maybe you can reach out to these manufacturers, and make a deal?

Shoes… while there will always be a market for high-end footwear, it’s certainly the designer-inspired and budget-conscious suppliers that will be getting more attention this year. Don’t be afraid to check out the huge market for discount shoes.

Jewelry… I’ve talked about the rise of online jewelry wholesalers in past posts, but another thing to consider is all the talk about gold and silver prices going through the roof. No, I’m not suggesting that buying jewelry will really be the best way to invest in wealth protection, but what I’m referring to instead is the fact that gold broke the USD1000 mark not too long ago… and it continues to climb. That means people had better buy their gold now, rather than waiting for the prices to continue the hike. Are you educating your customers about this? Of course, this means your timely large-volume purchases will protect you from rising costs down the road, too.

Toys… factory closures in China - and more than a few unscrupulous bosses disappearing with the company’s cash - have been making news here in the PRC, and that means that there are a lot of toys floating around with no place to go. This year’s Christmas will be the year of seeking value, and you can direct your customers to the best ones, if you act fast.

Electronics… I don’t need to say a lot about this one, do I? China is on a mission to build up its reputation as the world’s next electronics empire… and that means that right now you will find a lot of companies that want to bring their low price-point goods to you, in the hopes that it will boost their budgets for development, and push them to the front end of the surge. Again, this is a nice example of some leverage you may have over them. Beware of really poorly-performing hardware, though… just remember to buy smart, and win.

Health and Beauty… this is a great example of unknown Asian companies making their move. Did you know that Asian and Indian women have distinctly different needs than Caucasian women, with regard to simple things like concealer, lip liner, shader… and… all that other stuff that I’m suddenly embarrassed to admit I know a lot about? Do you know the demographics of your community – both online and on your street – that will influence your buying decisions? Do you know anything about Kevin, the famous makeup artist from Taiwan? Why don’t you Google him (by the way, this is a different guy from Kevyn Aucoin, the famed American cosmetics entrepreneur) and find out what Asian women are looking for in the USA. Be the first one to offer it to them at a special price! Here’s a tidbit for you: in China, the general consensus is that Japanese and Korean companies are the only ones who make top-quality cosmetics for the Asian market. That means the Chinese products can be had for a low price… for now.

Handbags… nothing replaces this category, and both men and women will be looking for the all-purpose ‘field kit’ that looks less like a nerdy excuse to keep all of your valuables on your person, and more like a stylish reason to carry extra items that come in handy when you’re out and about.

Home Décor… lots of folks are going to be moving to smaller homes, rental homes, and even moving in with friends and family as this housing crisis continues its graceful descent into oblivion. Sounds great, right? Well, the fact remains that people like to be comfortable… and that means offering the goods to make a new - and perhaps less posh - living space feel more like home, will be appreciated.

Food… ah, I saved the best for last. I was in the Food and Beverage business for years, and my prediction is that more families will be giving the gift of cookware this year, in an effort to curb spending by not eating out too often. There’s a lot of choice in the market, since the culinary craze of the past 20 years has built a very solid foundation of foodies far and wide… but this year, the emphasis will be on finding high-nourishment… and half the fat. Bad joke, I know. Pay attention to the smaller, low-cost items of choice in the area of home cooking, and family-sized wares.

Lest I forget, you can always turn to the power-packed pages of Toptenwholesale.com for a solid lead-generator, and a glimpse into what the trends are, in real-time. Other information to peruse would be COMSCORE’s helpful data, like the chart below.

It’s impossible to cover all the bases in one post, but it’s a start. Hopefully you will continue the search for the best outsource options, as you gear up for the most unpredictable holiday shopping season we’ve seen in a long time… just remember to Find it. Source it. Profit!

Accessories are the rage... they always have been, but never like today. While some people focus on a one-size-fits-all approach, the ones who are truly in the know will always tell you that accessories are the secret to making a statement. Be the one to supply your customers with accessories that sizzle... and read on to find out what the hottest ones are for this holiday season.

Here we are, approaching the 2009 Halloween parties, gatherings, clubs, events, and other assorted fun… and it’s the same old problem your customers have probably run into before; they don’t have a thing to wear, and they’ve got places to be. There’s also a serious undercurrent of heavy-duty budgeting that will insidiously work its way into all of the holidays this time… so the smart wholesale and retail specialists should be ready to offer wholesale fashion accessories to build your sales!

Today’s consumers are looking to you to provide them with the wholesale fashion accessories that transform a lifeless, drab, and uninspired costume into one that leaves people wondering why they didn’t find the source first? Clue your customers in to your secret (well… not so secret, I hope) cache of bling and other things that will increase your item count, and push your sales volume a tad further than if you strictly tried to rely upon the outdated strategy of thrusting a ready-to-wear costume in front of the customer… expecting them to dutifully take it, with no further questions to ask.

This is where you’re going to have to get creative, and start thinking fast about how you can create a palette of colors, textures, and materials that perhaps don’t just fall into the Halloween category. You might want to think about upping the ante with high-value goods that can be used for occasions other than fright night. Here’s a little TopTen list of hot wholesale fashion accessories that you might want to consider:

Jewelry – it’s a bit more expensive, sure… but it represents an investment. Raise the bar on your sales goals, by offering something that is classy, functional, and not too easily pinned down to the purpose of being part of a Halloween costume. Something that can be used year-round will justify itself when the customers are reaching for their wallets.

Belts – these things practically sell themselves. If there were ever a fashion accessory that could be classified as supremely versatile, the humble belt is it. It will look great as an add-on to the Halloween costumes that hit the streets this year, and those same belts will continue to bring satisfaction to your customers, as they become part of the wardrobe for the Autumn/Winter season.

Scarves – another old stand-by in the accessories game, this one will instantly add a splash of color to any outfit, bring the focal point to a new location, or add an element of mystery to an ensemble. It’s just a matter of what style, and what is done with them. Suggest three or four to your customers, and maybe even give a special holiday BOGO to keep them moving.

Hats – while these can be tricky to accessorize into a costume, there is the benefit of cold weather on the way. Function over fashion might be a selling feature, and in some parts of the country an easily-stashed, colorful knit hat will be a lifesaver for those who decide to wear less, and stay outdoors a little more.

Glasses – in China, the trend for the past year has been big, thick, plastic glasses with no lenses. Time will tell if this takes off in the States… but you could be the one to pull the trigger on this accessory getting early publicity! Glasses can be found on the cheap from a variety of producers these days, and you might be surprised to learn that the optics industry has been taking astonishing profits on specs for years… there’s no reason to let them have all the fun.

Shoes – the undisputed champs of fashion accessories, these items are going to become more important as the focus shifts from an overall ensemble, to details that count.

Bags – how else are you supposed to carry things? You might as well make sure that your customers are doing it in style.

Chains – these are the ‘wild card’ goods that have been gaining popularity over the past few years… they appeared on the belt loops of punk rockers in the 90’s, and now they are becoming synonymous with the hip-hop crowd. It pays to keep some of these in stock, just to keep things on an even keel.

Quirky Items – trust me when I say that sequined gloves are going to be big this year. So will the toys that resemble futuristic weapons like Star Trek hand-held phasers. Goofy ties, stockings with designs, and all manner of cosmetic appliances will be the rage, as people try to copycat their favorite looks from Hollywood’s blockbusters.

Gifts – what, nobody ever gave you a pair of plastic glow-in-the-dark Dracula fangs, just because you showed up at the party? Giving gifts to your guests and friends - even unsuspecting random victims – will set the tone for fun, as the party goes on.

There’s a lot of great ideas out there, and you should try to put your feelers out early, to see what your customers are asking for. A quick survey or e-newsletter with an email response option to a few simple questions could prove to be highly valuable, since it will not only give you a feel for what accessories are making news… but it may even provide you with some useful data about who’s reading your newsletters anyway! If you’re not sure how this works, take a look at the Toptenwholesale.com email blast newsletter, and be sure to register if you’re not already getting the news!

The news right now is that anyone who is looking for amazing deals can find them online. Wholesalers that are also looking for a break during the economic tough times can look towards companies that source quality fashion goods... and bring them directly to you, along with a winning attitude in outstanding service. You're looking for the companies that listen to customer feedback, anticipate the changes in the market, and continue to lead the industry by making the needed changes that smaller buyers demand, in order to stay competitive, so there's no reason to wait... read on to find out where the action is!

If you need further evidence of a market that is promoting successful returns for the ones who are coming up with new answers to the old questions, there’s actually more answers out there than there were just a few months ago. Let’s think about the leading wholesale distributors that are offering big benefits to retailers during these tough economic times. Some national online wholesalers are offering free shipping to all new customers, and helping small businesses that are looking for new and improved ways to dial-in their efficiency and crank up their competitiveness in the market. You might even be surprised to find out that top-quality apparel, handbags, and fashion accessories are being put up against the goods carried by larger department stores, at considerable savings! This new angle on the perceived value of branded goods is creating a huge opportunity for those who want to break into the market.

Since consumers everywhere are making changes to their spending habits — and the fashion industry has felt the pinch of profit margins slashed by falling sales volumes — it’s become more important than ever for quality products to become available to small vendors, since they are one of the last links in the chain that ends with the consumer.

On top of that, many of the leading wholesale distributors are forming partnerships and relationships with exclusive designers and manufacturers who produce goods that won’t show up anywhere else. This means your search for unique and fresh fashions for men, women, and children are all in front of you, and only a mouse click away. It also means that those popular and high-demand items like bags, belts, and other fashion accessories can be found at discounted wholesale prices, through your favorite online distributor!

Wholesale distributors like Shopforbags.com are sensitive to the needs of the smaller vendors. Minimum orders start at only $100, and buyers can mix and match designer products to create the perfect order for their business! There are more than 1,000 fashion products available, and all orders are shipped within 48 hours, which will be perfect for those who want to avoid delays in restocking their shelves as the products take off. It’s nice to know that you can have a friend in the business who will offer discounts on orders that were only available to the larger outlets in the past, but are now easily within your reach. This trend is gaining momentum, and the choices will invariably broaden as the market grows into its new position in the ever-changing global wholesale and retail community.

Other savvy distributors can also be found through TopTenWholesale.com Twitter account by droves of loyal retailers, and it would pay to look for the ones who employ online-only incentives that come in many forms, such as a current offer to receive free shipping for using a checkout code for all new accounts… or an e-coupon that applies credit to the next order. It’s no doubt that new incentives will manifest themselves over time, if you just want to wait. However, new competitors will also emerge from the shadows, so what are you waiting for?

Jade is the one thing I see on the arms, wrists, hands, and necks of many people I bump into here in China. Should they be the only ones to enjoy the benefits of having such a globally-recognized precious item within reach? Your customers would probably be very interested to know more about this mysterious stone from the Far East, so here are some things I'd like to share with you, to aid you in your search for the next hot trend in wholesale jewelry...

Here’s a quiz: Do you immediately think of China when you think of wholesale jade? If you do, it’s not an uncommon perception… most people think that wholesale jade is strictly a precious Chinese stone, and that it’s really only found way out in the far-flung corners of the globe. Truth is, jade can be found in many places… there’s even a two-ton piece sitting in front of the Visitor’s Center in downtown Anchorage, Alaska!

Something that surprises me is the fact that jade jewelry has long been the understated adornment, even though it’s been around for a very long time (some jade artifacts have been excavated from prehistoric sites) and it’s always been considered a thing of beauty and value. Today’s jade can be found worn by many men, women, and children in China, Korea, Vietnam, and other parts of Asia. It’s still got the mystique of being a treasured Oriental material, yet has deep roots in South American history as well. Another thing that surprises me is the fact that while I was living in the USA, I saw jade on a very rare basis. Living in China, I see it all the time.

I personally think we will see a big surge in the Western jade market in the coming months and years, mainly because the rising level of interest in Asian culture is in direct proportion to the news headlines that cover stories ranging from the deals gone wrong between China and Australia… to the positive changes in the realm of IPR (intellectual property rights) and… the WTO recently handing down a verdict to China — in the USA’s favor — over opening up the market for entertainment and media channels without government-sponsored middlemen. Okay, I’m getting ahead of myself… those are stories for another blog.

As for purchasing jade and related pieces of jewelry, it takes a real expert to make the call on what stones are truly of exquisite value, and which ones are just polished up to look nice under showroom lights. I won’t even attempt to make you a connoisseur after reading this, but you’ll at least have some understanding of what details to look for as you search for the right seller/distributor to supply you with some jade that will entice your customers who are looking for something special and unique.

First of all, there isn’t a clear-cut set of rules and standards for the grading and selection of jade at the production level. Sometimes, a panel of experts from renowned Chinese universities will assist with the process, and there are also numerous independent experts that can also be called upon to give their perspectives on making the determinations… but unfortunately – as with so many things in the PRC – the ‘experts’ are nothing more than a few guys who have some form of protection through the Byzantine maze of connections and guanxi that China is so infamous for. What’s a wholesaler to do? Are you at the mercy of scammers, or is there anything you can do to protect yourself and your investment?

Without pointing out the obvious (due dliligence!) stuff… I will provide some items to consider, when making the leap to buying a truckload of jade from China. In fact, this sounds like a good time for another TopTen List, doesn’t it?

Be prepared to look at a lot of different sellers. Walking away at the faintest hint of something that doesn’t feel right is usually the best course of action, and it will often save you from being roped into a deal that doesn’t suit you or your customers. Most of the major established sellers can be found on the East Coast, and places like Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang Province and Fujian Province are a hotbed of jade activity… both the good and the bad.

Know a little about the basics of jade characteristics. Jade is a tough and fairly hard material, a lot like quartz in many respects. If you can plainly see chips and flakes of stone being produced by the goods in question, walk away. If there are cracks and breaks along the pieces, you are better off without them. Imagine you are giving this as a gift to a loved one. If it wouldn’t be good enough for you, it’s probably not good enough for your buyers either.

Color of the stone is the single most important characteristic. Hands down. Some people prefer an intense emerald-like hue, while other jade-lovers like to see a bluish-waxy color that looks soft and buttery. All of them are okay, and to be honest, jade comes in a lot of different colors. Something for everyone!

Intensity of the color can be a lot like looking at a piece of ice. Have you ever wondered why some ice cubes look as clear as glass, while others might have a cloudy, almost milky appearance? So have I. This will be a factor in determining the value of your jade.

Brightness of color, and the finish is very much a subjective sticking point, and while some dealers tell you that a high gloss is preferred, others will tell you that the ‘greasy’ look is the mark of truly superb material. Research your market, and know what your customer wants before getting too carried away with this part.

Evenness of color and depth is the last one of the ‘big four’… and it’s the one that usually separates real from fake in the least amount of time. High-quality jade is even in color, and extremely expensive. If you are getting perfect pieces of jade that show no variations in their color for a bargain price, you should know that you are still paying too much. The merchandise could very well be glass, or some other mineral that has been dyed or polished with a colored wax that will wear away faster than your reputation!

Be prepared to make ‘em wait a while. Nothing will flush out the bluffers like making them nervous with a vague timeline, or no clear indication of how long you plan to be in the area. Of course this goes both ways, and the Chinese are no strangers to the waiting game.

Don’t let the cargo leave your sight! I’ve heard a good number of horror stories from quite a few laowai doing business in China, and the one thing that is consistently at the top of the list (besides disappearing funds!) is the old bait-and-switch. Perhaps the best advice I have ever heard was from a guy I know who buys in China, and trades industrial uniforms and safety apparel to some companies and institutions in Africa… he told me that he personally inspects the cargo, seals the container, and then sits by it (sometimes for hours) until it’s on the ship! Pretty extreme, but then again, your blood pressure will be too… if you find out you’ve been had.

Avoid generic names, and try to apply the proper names of the material you sell, even if it means making the extra effort at branding or marketing a new concept to the public. After all, the one thing scammers hate most is a well-informed buyer, and the only way you will weed out the bad sellers from the good ones is by making sure that your customers are asking for the right stuff by name. Words like serpentine (also bowenite), carnelian, aventurine quartz, grossularite, Vesuvianite, and soapstone should become part of your vocabulary.

Further education goes a long way, if you want to make jade your area of expertise. Since there isn’t one single, unified global standard in the industry, and the lines are quite blurry from one definition to the next, you have a great opportunity to become the expert!

There are great advantages to being the first guy on the block to offer jade to willing buyers… but the reality of the situation is that you’ve got to make certain of the risks involved. While it’s easy to say that doing biz in China isn’t worth the hassle, frustration, and immeasurable layers of deception… it’s also quite valid to point out that being the one with the endurance to earn your chops through careful and steady forward growth will pay off in the end. I’ve said it a hundred times before: if it was easy… everyone would be doing it, right? Do you remember what I mentioned earlier about blood pressure? It’s said by numerous Traditional Chinese Medicine advocates that wearing jade can improve and regulate blood circulation… you might want to start there!

Should buyers, sellers and wearers of Urban Wear … also called Hip Hop Apparel and Youth Clothing … be concerned about Baggy Pants Laws? Those are some rather strange Town Council Ordinances that basically say: Wear Baggy Pants — or Show Any of Your “Tightie Whiteys” (underwear) — and You Get a Ticket.

Observers who focus more on Individual Legal & Constitutional Rights (less on Fashion Trend Gossip) have other names for Baggy Pants Laws, including “Criminalizing Fashion” and “Racial-Ethnic Profiling via Clothes.” (See the link below to a blog post, Racial Undertones of Baggy Pants Laws.)

You With The Droopy Drawers, Halt! I’ve Got A Ruler.

Laws banning “baggy pants” include fines (up to $1,000) on Urban Wear “offenders.” Or they threaten jail time (!) on either youth who wear pants below their waistlines … or on their parents. (Apparently, for not supervising their offspring’s wardrobe “malfunctions.”)

Much as this kind of small-town “decency” ordinance sounds like a joke, Baggy Pants Laws have passed in Missouri, been proposed in Kentucky, and even put police sketch artists to work in Michigan. (The Baggy Pants Chart above is from the Flint Michigan Police Department.)

Pants-Law-Passers claim they Protect Public Decency, Protect Us From Indecent Exposure (Oh nooooooo. Underpants!), Legislate Good Taste (Whatever that is; Whoever defines it), and Support Community Standards.

Others add to that list. Baggy Pants Laws can also be labeled: Doomed. Illegal. Unconstitutional.

Urban Apparel Sales Still Riding Higher Than Waistbands

One reader of a blog post on the “criminalization” of baggy pants bluntly said:

“With all the problems facing the youth of America and our country as a whole, should legislatures and the criminal justice system be bogged down with this crap?” (R. Burdick on 04/17/2009)

Vadim at the blog Flawless Hustle said:

“Lucky for us, we have the Constitution, and we have the First Amendment, which clearly allows for Americans to exercise their Freedom of Expression to, for example, wear clothes others might find distasteful.”

Urban Wear and Hip-Hop-Youth Clothing buyers who still have doubts should take a tip from Michelle Chen at RaceWire, who applies the “Supreme Test” … literally. (The U.S. Supreme Court and a pile of precedent.)

“Grown-ups have been fretting about what kids are wearing for generations. In the 1960s, black armbands worn in protest of the Vietnam War were banned, ultimately leading to a landmark Supreme Court ruling. During the 1990s, courts ruled that some bans on provocatively worded T-shirts and other controversial fashion flunked the constitutional test because they didn’t serve a valid safety or disciplinary purpose.”

Whether you’re looking to supply demand for uber-Cool Shades, Kiddie beach wear, haut couture look-alikes or genuine, imitation knockoffs from popular films and outer space, there’s a wholesale supplier who has pre-packs, display racks and discount-priced small lots ready to ship.

Here’s a look at hot sunglasses trends, buyer demands and niche market needs. Just in time for the big Summer Trade Shows.

1.	Branded & Demanded Sunglasses

Top Ten Searched Sunglasses (reported by Google-assisted AOL Search in April 2009) were:

1.	Oakley Sunglasses – Popularized by athletes who like durable, glare-reducing lenses. Lance Armstrong won the Tour de France wearing Oakleys, as did 88 medalists from the Beijing Olympics.

2.	Maui Jim Sunglasses – Standard attire for beachcombers, surfer wannabes

3.	Ray Bans – Coolest of hot sunglasses since the 1980s, like the aviators worn by Tom Cruise in the film “Top Gun” and as protection from Total Memory Erase in the black-framed Ray Bans worn by Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in “Men In Black.” Ray Bans are back: In fashion, In demand. In celebrity photo spreads.

4.	Chanel – Over-sized, wrap-around sunglasses adopted as fashion signature by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis over 40 years ago, and by today’s young Hollywood stars (Nicole Richie, Mary-Kate Olson)

5.	Prada
6.	Gucci
7.	Ed Hardy
8.	Coach
9.	Dior

10.	Marc Jacobs – a designer name that shows up on apparel, shoes and accessories, as well as sunglasses.

Jay-Y Enterprises is a premier dealer of designer style and licensed sunglasses at competitive wholesale prices. Jay-Y imports directly from the manufacturer, to save “middleman markup” costs, and distributes best-selling designer lines, including: DG, Vintage DG, DG Ski Goggles; Locs and Locas, Choppers, Biohazard, Bikers, Princess. X-Loop, Relic, Aviator, Retro Optix, Road Warrior and USA Eagle. Jay-Y also wholesales licensed MLB and NFL sunglasses.

Here’s a quick peek sample of Jay-Y Sunglasses offerings::

2.	Wholesale Replica, Discount, Designer Look-alike Sunglasses

Very marketable through shopping mall carts, street fairs and online accessories sites, replica sunglasses look much like designer brands – though they’re not exact duplicates, and should never be represented as brand named Adidas, Anarchy, Armani, Aviators, Black Fly, Bolle, Brighton, Calvin Klein, Cartier, Chloe, Chopper, Christian Dior, Diesel, DKNY, Dolce & Gabbana, Fendi, Gargoyles, Gucci, Guess, Harley, Juicy, Kenneth Cole, Liz Claiborne, Locs, Louis Vuitton, Nautica, Nike, Ralph Lauren, Revo, Roxy, Serengeti, Versace or Vogue.

The difference is a retail sale cost that’s a fraction of the original brand’s price and a high-margin sale for resellers who buy at wholesale discount rates.

Find designer line sunglasses and their replicas — both at wholesale discounts — by searching at wholesale supplier industry sites, such as Sunglasses at TopTenWholesale Search, or product directory listings for Sunglasses Wholesalers at Wholezilla.com.

Or check on wholesale replica sunglasses and accessories available from CTS Wholesale Sunglasses, who also markets an exclusive line of sports sunglasses – Xsportz™ — highlighted below.

3.	Hot Sports, Cool Sunglasses

Entertainment media companies who profitably wholesaled DVDs and CDs during better times – but are NOT in the Big Box Retailer supply pipeline – can adapt to shrinking prices and sales in the current consumer buying slowdown.

Here are tips to survive and, possibly, thrive in today’s media supplier environment from the vice-president of both marketing and purchasing for Spinning Disc Entertainment. See how Spinning Disc launched dropshipping, new product lines and took a second look at Bargain Buy DVDs to change with changing demands.

–Top Ten Wholesale Newsroom Editor

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How The Economy Has Affected The Media Industry
By Eric, VP Marketing/Purchasing
Spinning Disc Entertainment
Source for Movies, Music & More
The economic downturn has affected people all over the country, not to mention the world. Not surprising, lower consumer spending has certainly had an impact on the media industry.
While major electronics retailers like Best Buy have the resources to weather an economic downturn, many wholesalers of media-related products have only two options: (1) Try to hang on and “tough it out” until things get better; or (2) Change with the changing economy.
Spinning Disc Masthead
Spinning Disc Entertainment started out as a wholesaler of budget DVDs and CDs. As times changed, so did Spinning Disk: We added more product lines. We started carrying Major Label CDs, which were a hit, and then moved on to Major Studio DVDs, which also immediately took off in sales.
On the flip side, we saw decline of the Budget DVD market because so many manufacturers were competing for the same pool of customers. Then, prices dropped lower and lower; movie titles we used to move by the hundreds became non-movers in our inventory. Many media suppliers faced the same dilemma – An inventory of great movies at cheap prices in which no one was interested.
Avoiding The Zero-Margin Trap. People ask why Spinning Disc doesn’t carry new releases, movies and music that just hit the market. What new media wholesalers and retailers don’t realize is that New Releases are not money-makers: You cannot make a profit on products that cost you $11 per title that you cannot sell for more than $12. (And, no, you can’t buy hot new releases wholesale for only $5 per title.) Only a major media company can survive on such a thin profit margin. It’s best to avoid this profit-shaved trap and, instead, steer your customers in a different direction.
Return of Budget-Priced Media. Other changes that arrived with economic slowdown were a tightening of the order pipeline, as orders came in more slowly, and a build-up in inventory as sales slowed down. Rising costs, changing customer demands, declining consumer spending pushed many media wholesalers and manufacturers to the curb. And, then …
We noticed that those budget-priced DVDs and CDs that didn’t interest buyers two years ago have become desirable once again … due to low cost.
Stake Out Proactive Positions. Stocking budget products during rough times is a start on surviving; but you can’t stop there. Not to belabor the obvious, but when unemployment approaches double digits and buying entertainment is not at the top of peoples’ To Buy lists, that pullback “trickles up” from retailer to wholesale supplier.
Proactive actions during these times:
· Call every one of your buyers, retail customers and offer them deals and discounts.
· Stay in email contact with customers, during uptimes and downtimes, so that your company is top-of-mind when they do need to order media.
· Never stop promoting or marketing your wholesale media business and customer services – You’re letting people know, “Hey, we’re still here and we’re not giving up. So don’t give up on us.”
More formally, that’s called “Maintaining the Brand and Reputation.” Companies that go quiet and hunker down during bad times are not top-of-mind when things start looking better. Former customers assume they haven’t heard from you because you didn’t survive.
It’s all about using all your resources. An old saying in the media business is: It’s not what you know; it’s who you know. With more than 40 years experience in the entertainment media business, we at Spinning Disc know the value of making — and keeping — great contacts. We proactively used our contacts to learn what new products we should try out in our inventory.
Offer Dropshipping. The dropship program we developed for our retail web site has been a big hit. By offering to dropship new DVD and CD products, and by demanding no investment from our customers, direct delivery to retail customers keeps our buyers interested in doing business with us.
New and Related Product Lines. Recently, Spinning Disc has added Books and Bumper Stickers; Classics & Collectible DVD sets; Car Magnets. We’re even working on T-Shirts. We believe that if we combine these products with our current offerings, we could make up for some of what has been lost since the downturn started.
The media wholesaling business is neither dead nor dying. It is changing; and if you change with it and adapt to new demands, then your media business will make it, too.
Go ahead: Pick a product, any product, from head (Hats, Scarves) to toe (Shoes, Boots). Or pick “A” (Arts & Crafts), through “G” (Gifts, General Merchandise), till you run out of alphabet (Radio ID Ear Tags, Toys, Valentines, Watches).
You’ll find no lack of Sellers, Manufacturers and Distributors. But where do you find the right source for your reseller scale and business needs? Who do you trust? And how on Earth does one find reliable wholesale suppliers in a global marketplace?
Savvy Buyers need to find reliable sources for affordable, quality products … at terms, quantities and wholesale prices that meet their needs. And let’s not forget the end-buyer — your customers — who request products by spec or hot trend, marketplace demand or price point.
Here are sources and search sites, shortcuts and search terms, to find trusted product sources.
1. ARE YOUR SOURCES LISTED AT RELIABLE INDUSTRY SITES?
Reliable and responsive product sellers cluster together at wholesale industry (vertical) sites. Look for product sourcing sites that are well established, focus on a specialized segment of the Seller/ Manufacturer / Supplier chain, and have their own brand name reputation to protect.
· Find Global Products and Manufacturing Sources. To find new products and companies in the global manufacturing sector, try the business search engine at Manufacturer.com .
This specialized site features product lists for Sellers (New Products Wanted, such as a request for laptop computers in the UK); and Buyers (New Products, such as RFID Animal Electronic Ear Tags, by place of origin and detailed operating specs). Background data provided to Buyers/ Sellers lists date joined Manufacturer.com exchange, year established for business, number of R&D staff, registered capital, and Terms (payment, order, packaging, lead/delivery times).
Those lists are in addition to searchable global product sourcing in popular product categories:
Apparel … Apron … Bags … Bathroom … Cable Ties … Chair … Electronics … Furniture … Garment Steamer … Golf … Gifts … Handbags … Jerseys … Ipod … Jeans … Jewelry … Knives … LCD TV … LED … Luggage … Medical Equipment … MP3 … Organizer … Painting … Printer … Screw … Slim Natural Tea … Shoes … Solar Products … Stepper … Sunglasses … Negative plate … T-Shirts … USB … Welded Mesh … Watches
Manufacturer.com partners with ASD/AMD (see Trade Shows, below), Fashion District.org and Top Ten Wholesale …
· Locate Quality Wholesalers Who Sell Direct to Buyers. To connect with thousands of new product sources of apparel, footwear and general merchandise selling at all price points and quantities, search at the best established wholesaler search network — Top Ten Wholesale .
Top Ten Wholesale’s product directory and search network connects buyers and sellers at all points in the supply chain (importer/manufacturer to retail market) with quality products … at affordable, wholesale and below-wholesale prices. Top Ten Wholesale features Hot Deals, Most Popular Products and a free Top Ten Wholesale Trends site that plots and displays the volume of search requests for specific products from 20,000 buyer and seller searches every day. A kind of wholesale pulse check.
Top Ten Trends
Searches at Top Ten Wholesale network offer qualified sources of over 50 popular product categories, including:
Apparel … Arts and Crafts … Automotive … Body Jewelry … Books … Business Services … Cellular … Closeouts … Clothing … Convenience Store … Customer Returns … DVDs … Dollar Store … Dropshippers … Easter … Electronics … Fashion Accessory … Fragrances … Furniture … General Merch … Gifts … Greeting Cards … Handbags … Hats … Holiday … Housewares … Imports … Ipod … Jewelry … Knives … Leather … Licensed … Lingerie … Liquidations … Luggage … Music … Novelties … Off-price … Pet Supplies … Security Products … Shoes … Sporting Goods … Sunglasses … Toys … Valentines … Video Games … Watches … Tools
· Bid on Specialized Product Categories at Auction. Do real-time product sourcing, at your pre-set price points, on specialized auction sites. Examples: Bidz, which hosts 15,000 live jewelry and fashion accessories auctions every day. Liquidation, where wholesale auctions on liquidation merchandise start at $100.
2. DRILL DOWN PRODUCT SEARCHES BY YOUR OWN CRITERIA
Reliable industry sites not only offer full searches on any product category, but they help smart buyers source products on terms that match their business needs. Refine product sourcing at industry sites by adding key words to your searches.
For example, to drill down to the right suppliers for your needs, add to a product category search (say clothing) one or two key words that match your most important criteria …
Price Point ADD: closeout, off-price, below wholesale, discount, returns, liquidation, excess inventory
Quantity ADD: truckload, pallet, minimum order, no minimum order
Delivery ADD: dropship, no setup fee, displayed, pre-inventoried, free shipping orders, quantity in stock, warehouse capacity, lead time
Custom Order ADD: personalized, customizable products
Quality ADD: first quality, seconds, irregular, manufacturer brand, label, designer
3. DO YOUR SELECT PRODUCT SUPPLIERS SHOW UP AT TRADE SHOWS?
More than simple product displays or exhibition parties and goodie bags, wholesale trade shows tend to be working fun … lots of order-taking and order-filling, a place to build face-to-face business relationships.
Whether they’re large convention center shows or small, specialized regional expos, the most trusted and reliable product distributors and manufacturers make sure they make it to the shows. Finding product suppliers at wholesale industry trade shows is an immediate way to measure customer service and product support. And trade shows come as specialized or comprehensive as product buyers up and down the supply chain. Look for your potential suppliers:
· Off-Price Show is the right place to source discount, below-wholesale and closeout merchandise, from clothing to giftware. As the Off-Price Specialists say: You have to buy right to sell right!
· ASD/AMD is a huge trade show that organizes discount and designer lines of merchandise – from Fashion Accessories, Jewelry and Gifts to Military outerwear/surplus, Tools and General Merchandise – in specialized product category floor plans. In addition to face-to-face product sourcing, buyers can attend wholesale marketing seminars and tap industry news sources.
· ASAP Show showcases overseas apparel manufacturers, connecting the Top 5% of contract apparel producers with thousands of international buyers. An all-under-one-roof product sourcing opportunity billed as The Authority in Global Sourcing.
· Value Price Expo focuses on the extreme-value marketplace (health and beauty merchandise, accessories, housewares, gifts, consumer electronics and hardware), targeted to dollar/discount chain store buyers, as well as deep discount product buyers for independent and online auction retailers. To meet regional marketplace needs, Value Price has split its expos by the calendar (January, March, May) and by U.S. region (East and West).
For Everything You’d Want to Know About Finding Trade Shows – US and International — see Top Ten Wholesale Newsroom’s Mark Your Trade Show Calendar .
Something happened while you were keeping your wholesaler, distributor, chain or independent retailer business running through choppy waters. Whether you’re navigating through overstock inventory that didn’t move during the holidays, or whether you’re planning trade deals to fill empty warehouse shelves, here’s a news flash.
Waves of demand rippled through the Buyer/Seller Marketplace in just the past couple weeks. In fact, event-driven demand for some products are flooding what is normally Post-Holiday January Sales Slumps. (Don’t tell the gloomy sales pundits just yet.)
Have a quick look at these products and product categories. You’ll see how trends and building demand are actually swamping some brand-name suppliers, who can’t keep up with the market now.
1. SPORTS & FITNESS
Athletic Apparel … the right Sport/Exercise Footwear … Exercise and Training Equipment … Books, DVDs and Games focused on weight-loss, exercise plans and fitness routines.
· Everyone expects January to be slow for retailers after frantic pre- and post-holiday sales calm down. The National Retail Federation has tracked predictable January slowdown for years. So why did mega-merchandiser Wal-Mart recently announce an immediate push on Sports and Fitness merchandise, promotions and early Spring Sales?
· Right Timing: It’s the right time for smart sellers to leverage all those “Get Healthy” New Year’s resolutions.
· 18% Growth: Digital marketplace trackers at comScore reported Sports & Fitness as the TOP product category for online sales this past holiday season … growing 18% (EIGHTEEN percent growth) over Holiday 2007 online sales.
· Consumer Price-Points: comScore ranked what it discovered about online spending habits (See Top Online Product Categories for Holiday Season 2008, in chart below). Trackers and analysts at comScore concluded that consumers finally feel comfortable about purchasing higher-priced items through online purchases. And that comfort level helped boost online sales of somewhat pricey fitness equipment, such as elliptical machines and treadmills.
To search for wholesale suppliers who sell direct to retailers in this product category, see TopTenWholesale’s listings of Sports Equipment Wholesalers and Athletic Shoes .
2. ELECTRONICS FOR ONE OR MORE
Video Games and Consoles … Electronics Accessories … Personal Electronics and Mobile Devices show demand growth online and are holding steady in brick and mortar store sales.
· According to SpendingPulse (a macro-economic indicator based on national retail sales activity through the MasterCard payments network), the overall category of Electronics/ Appliances declined 26%. Intel just announced production slowdowns in computer chip manufacturing due to a downturn in sales of computer hardware. And there are persistent rumors of overstock inventory in higher-priced electronics (plasma and flat-screen TVs, high price-point GPS systems) sitting on the shelves of big box electronics retailers.
· 2nd-Fastest Growing Product Category: ‘Course, none of the above statistics explain persistent and growing demand for Video Games, Consoles and Accessories. This segment of the general Electronics product category was ranked by comScore as “second fastest-growing” product group in recent online sales. Continuing demand for gaming consoles like Microsoft X-Box and PlayStation 3 pushed online sales up 14 percent.
· Personal Electronics Cross Buyer Segments: Another sales and demand boost to the personal electronics product category is cross-over marketing. For example, market demand is still strong for Nintendo Wii consoles … not only for gamers but for wannabe musicians and for exercise/fitness buffs, with Wii platforms and sensor gear.
Crossing promotion of Nintendo Wii exercise consoles with increasing demand for Exercise Equipment among Sports & Fitness consumers (See product category #1, above) is a smart buyer/seller double play.
· Ditto Cross-Selling for personal electronic gadgets such as CardioTrainer, a GPS-based application for the Android handheld device. CardioTrainer lets hikers, runners, cyclists and fitness daily walkers track their workouts and distance covered. It keeps training records for the user and syncs with a web-based application that displays workout sessions on a computer monitor, too.
Search for wholesale, distributor and resale Electronics product sources (including Returned and Liquidation Electronics) at TopTenWholesale’s Electronics Wholesalers search listings.
3. NEW CELEBRITY CLOTHING & ACCESSORIES
J. Crewe Casuals for Women and Girls … Designer Copycat Evening Dresses … New Hot Colors … Non-Matching Shoes & Accessories
· The Buzz in fashionista blogs, magazines and star-stalker celebrity TV shows just went up 50 decibels in the past few weeks. The biggest amplifiers? (1) Entrance of a casual but style conscious First Family into the U.S. White House. (2) What was worn on the red carpets at several celebrity awards events, such as the Grammys, Independent Spirit Awards, Screen Actor’s Guild and Oscar ceremonies.
· Overnight Sell Outs: A trend snowballed from the sheath dresses with matching coats (worn by now First Lady Michelle Obama on the 2008 campaign trail) and bright colored – periwinkle, orange – fitted, ribboned coats (worn by First Kids Malia and Sasha Obama to Inauguration Day swearing in January 20). All were from J. Crewe Casuals Collections; some off-the-rack and some (the young girls’ colorful coats and knit mufflers) customized from J. Crewe designs.
Fashion Rumor is that J. Crewe retail outlets immediately sold out of every dress and coat in their stores within a day of the styles being worn by the Obama ladies.
· Romantic and Bejeweled Clothing: We called it here a month ago in Spring 2009 Apparel & Accessories Trends . Trend is for Romantic Styles in women’s dresses (casual and evening gowns), including halter or one-shoulder tops, toga wraps and sheer gauzy fabrics. Plus jewel-encrusted clothing.
No surprise, then, to hear fashion buzz over Michelle Obama’s Inaugural Ball Gown (a pale yellow, one-shouldered gown topped with sheer lace netting and hand-worked appliqués). Or that the First Lady’s modest yellow (it’s called mimosa) sheath dress and wrap coat from Cuban-born designer Isabel Toledo at the swearing-in ceremony showed – only in close ups – heavily embossed stitching and tiny Swarovski rhinestones worked quietly into the fabric.
Red carpets at televised film awards ceremonies and the many celebrity guest balls on Inauguration evening focused on: Romantic One-Shoulder or Low Strapless Evening Gowns; Bright Jewel-toned Blue-Purple-Garnet ball gowns; ornate filigree necklaces; and wide-shouldered, plunging neckline evening gowns in flowing, chiffon-like fabrics.
· Designer-Inspired and Designer Copycat Apparel: Smart apparel buyers and sellers will have no trouble finding affordable designer duplicates, at all price points, to feed market demands for women’s and girl’s clothing that matches celebrity trends listed above.
Within hours, Fabiano designers readied a knockoff of L.A. designer Jason Wu’s one-shouldered inaugural ball gown for Michelle Obama for “about $400.” Fabiano also designed a replica of the Isabel Toledo-designed lemongrass bejeweled sheath dress and coat worn by First Lady Obama at the swearing-in for a mere “$398” per outfit. Even lower-priced apparel that picks up these basic, instantly super trendy styles are now in the making.
Some TV fashionistas are advising young fashionable teens and tweens on how to customize off-the-rack coats with streaming ribbons and ribbon belts … to dupe Malia’s and Sasha’s customized J. Crewe coats.
· Color & Style Trends By the Book … Or Not: Many of the above celebrity style trends were recorded in Mandi Norwood’s “Michelle Obama Style Guide.” Color Trends Tips (1) White is the New Black, especially for Men’s Dress Wear; (2) Variations on the Yellow Color Palette (yellow equals “hopeful”) including lemongrass, pale yellow, mimosa; (3) Not Going Too Matchy-Matchy with accessories … pairing the lemongrass dress/coat set with different shades of green for shoes and gloves.
4. Top Selling Online Product Categories
Buyer and Sellers can find growing product categories to source and sell by looking at sales data that separate store (offline) sales from better performing online sales.
· Consumer electronics store Best Buy reported a 34% increase in online sales for December 2008 (an increase over online sales for year-end 2007). However, comparing in-store sales for 2007 and 2008 showed a 6.8% decline.
· Wal-Mart Stores also reported increased online sales this past holiday season, led by sales of entertainment and home products.
For an online holiday shopping season that recorded a disappointing 3-percent decline in sales, a positive note is that e-commerce trends outperformed overall consumer spending in several product categories, which is to say that e-commerce continued to capture an increasing share of consumers’ wallet. –comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni
