It's all about SEO these days. It's all about driving traffic to your site, and making sure that people stay there long enough to get an idea about your online seller store, wholesale offerings, or retail goods. However, there isn't enough time in the day to manage your business and promote the whole thing online... or is there? Read on as I show you a few tips and tricks that could make all the difference for those of you who aren't too sure about where to even begin, as you try to get the attention of more eyeballs, capture the attention of the attention-deficient, and grab more “sticky time” from consumers...

A long time ago, it was pretty easy to get noticed on the Internet. All you had to do was put a few lines of code on your web site’s home page meta tags, and let the search engines do the rest for you. Now it’s a whole different story, and there are more new ways being generated every day… as old ones are phased out almost as quickly. Is it even worth it? Of course, letting toptenwholesale.com and its network of sites manufacturer.com, wholesaleu.com, offpricenetwork.com help buyers to connect directly with the wholesaler or manufacturer of choice is an easy option, but there’s a few things you can do for yourself too. I’m going to give you a few ideas that don’t require a degree in Computer Science to implement, that will perhaps help you gain visibility in a sea that is awash in technological mysteries.

Let’s take spiders, for instance. Spiders are not always a welcome sight, but in the world of Internet marketing they are indispensable. These “spiders” are the little pieces of code that is often referred to as a bot, or a software agent. Sounds like I’ve been watching the MATRIX too many times, eh? The job of the web spider is to crawl around and find information. This can be a simple one-line affair, or more usually a complex set of variables and instructions that are designed to work within the parameters of an environment that is constantly being modified, upgraded, and sometimes corrupted. It also takes a bit of know-how to craft one of these little bots, and to send it off on its way, without wasting your valuable time… or returning with nothing useful.

You don’t need to write code. You don’t even need to know much more than the usual routine of checking email, browsing sites, or using an online form. Some of the best things you can do to drive traffic to your site is to simplify your strategy, focus on the goals, and follow through consistently. If you’ve spent any time doing sales (which I suspect many of you have) then you know all about the 30-second commercial, the value of organizational skills, and the power of relationships. Here then, is a TopTen list of things you should consider when looking at the real basic methods for driving traffic to your site:

Branding is not just coming up with a cute logo and a clever name, but it means you should design a look and feel for your site as well. Choose a color and style that you like, and stick with it. Tie it all together through your online presence, printed materials, and promotional goodies. Bring the virtual and physical together on your terms, and people will come to associate these subtle themes with your business.

Make sure the customer can trust you. Build policies into your business that don’t confuse consumers or leave them with a bad taste in their mouths… and remember to look at everything you do from their perspective first.

Be creative with the added values on your site. Offer things that the customer will appreciate, like industry related links, recommended reading, or just galleries of fun pictures from the latest trade show or wholesaler event. These things don’t cost you much, and they will add to the time your customer spends on your site… as well as adding to the usefulness of it, too.

Include the ability to recommend your site to others. This can be as simple as putting a button on your page that lets the user submit an email or subscribe to a newsletter.

Pay attention to the changes. Google is pretty good about keeping a cap on things, and that means you should keep your site up to spec, in order to avoid getting penalized for putting one line too many in your header text, or making a meta tag that upsets some part of the analytics. Keyword placement can be an issue too, so find out what you need to know, and keep looking it up to stay ahead of the curve.

Advertise your site when it launches, and keep in touch with anyone who comments on it. Word of mouth is still a great way to generate leads and sales, so make sure you’re staying in front of people by reminding them about your site and services.

Create a piece of material – like an article or news piece – that is targeted specifically to your customer… and then put it on your site! Give it to them, because they won’t be asking for it. Also, it would help if you made an effort to pass it around, by offering it to readers with reprint permission. This is a great way to find your work in some unexpected places.

Use your web address for everything! Put it on your business cards, printed literature, T-shirts… everything and everywhere is best. Don’t be shy about it, since directing eyes to your site is numero uno in this game.

Join other sites that have chat rooms and discussion boards, in order to become more familiar to those in the business. It might take some time and effort, but you’ll end up becoming well-known in some circles, even if they’ve never met you! Of course a signature line with your company’s site address is a good idea… and try not to be too assertive with the self-promotion. Moderators on discussion forums love to zap anyone who comes around just to cheer about their own business without leaving anything useful for the other members to discuss.

This one sounds silly, but… visit your own site regularly, and check the links to make sure they’re okay. You’d be surprised how mahy dead links and error pages come up as your site grows and changes, and this is not the message you want to send out to those customers who have no time for figuring out why they got a 404 error when they just wanted to see your online catalog.

As you can see, there is a lot you can do without getting too technical, or without having to jump onto viral campaigns to boost your site’s visibility. For more specific and targeted strategies, be sure to contact the people at toptenwholesale.com for information on how you can use the power of heavy-hitting SEO to bring your site to the forefront. There’s a lot you can do, but the only thing you want your customers to do is Find it. Source it. Profit! From you, that is.

There's a whole world of mysterious data-crunching and numbers-based information being passed around out there... and while most of it is not very interesting to look at, some of it can come in pretty handy for the wholesale and retail specialists who want to see what kind of traffic is being generated by all of that heavy-duty marketing through their sites, as well as promoting online sales initiatives. Take a minute to read the story, and see what we have to say about why you should use these tools of analytics, measurements, and tracking to work for you...

You’ve spent a lot of time tweaking your site, getting everything streamlined, polished, and efficient. You’ve designed everything from the ground up, and it’s been a gradual but steady climb to the top, as you developed strategies that seem to keep winning customers over and moving that merchandise at a steady clip. Just like Toptenwholesale.com and its network of sites (manufacturer.com, wholesaleu.com, offpricenetwork.com), you’re all about general merchandise, apparel, accessories, gifts, electronics, handbags, jewelry, toys, and more… but you’re still stuck when it comes to figuring out what kind of people are really looking at your site, and even more perplexed by the thought of developing marketing that caters to a specific group, by using some web-based metrics. After all, how much information could there be out there to help you out with this stuff?

Plenty of information. As someone wisely pointed out to me once upon a time: “Everything you put on the Internet exists somewhere, even if you don’t see it anymore.” Scary stuff indeed.

To put it simply, much of it can used to drive your sales in the right direction, if you know the answers to the five ‘W’ questions, and us them to track your website performance…

Who is checking out your site right now? Who visits most often, and browses the contents of your online catalogs, but never buys? Don’t you want to know which customers are using your FAQ page, then heading straight into the order form? This kind of information can help you better service the people that are currently working with your site… and tailor the rest of it to suit the ones that seem interested, but not fully compelled to follow through.

What are visitors looking at, anyway? Do you really know which parts of your site get the most traffic, and which components are getting the most clicks?

Where does your site show up on the Internet, anyway? You might be surprised to see some blogs and other sites that have linked your site in reference to a story, article, or random post. On top of that, you’ll probably find a few reasons to work out a deal with some sites that you’d love to have a link posted on, which will direct traffic back to your site very easily.

When do visitors frequent your site? Are there particular times of the day, month, or even year that seem to get the most activity? This goes beyond the simple logic of holiday season peak traffic, but maybe there are some connections to other events on the calendar that tie in very nicely with your site’s offerings. Once you’ve identified these trends, it could be easier to position yourself for some higher visibility during the times that count most.

Why are consumers even looking at your site, anyway? True, you’ve spent some money and worked out some deals with partners and affiliates to promote your property, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg… consumer buying habits can be tricky to nail down, and chasing down the answer to the ever-elusive why can put you in the lead. It may also expose some flaws in your system, and help you to answer the other logical question: why not?

One major thing to consider is the rise of the vertical search market on the Internet. Companies like our very own Toptenwholesale.com specialize in narrowing the spectrum of search, to give seekers of industry-specific information the tools they need to find more relevant results with fewer clicks. While search giants like Google are doing an amazing job of bringing information to everyone, they almost do it too well, and a simple search for a text query will turn up thousands of results. Who’s got that kind of time? Fewer clicks - in terms of buyers looking for sources - means the difference between somebody choosing you… or your competition! It also means that you’ll get answers to questions that are heavy on the wholesale, and lighter on the other stuff that doesn’t apply to your business. All of this will work towards your goal to Find it. Source it. Profit!

SEO is a scary word for some... for a good reason... because for the non-technical people out there, it's a lot like listening to somebody explain how a combustion engine works. Powerful SEO marketing this holiday season doesn't have to be an unattainable goal for you, and this story should give you a few great ideas to make your site run smoothly as it increases in visibility, and gets more buyers to notice you! Read on to find out more...

You’ve been working hard all year, trying to tie everything together and make your online seller site a smooth-running machine… but there always seems to be more you can do to get that valuable search engine optimization (SEO) performance you desire. Maybe your site looks good, feels good, and is an absolute pleasure to browse… but you’re dismayed at how little overall traffic you’re seeing in return for your efforts? Isn’t there more you can do to maximize those hits, and get the rankings you deserve when people are throwing your category up on Google? Why is some random YouTube video from 2005 of a water-skiing cat showing up before your site’s URL on the results pages? Don’t take it personally… just know that it’s time for the wholesale and retail specialist to harness the power of SEO marketing this season, and really make those eyeball-hours count for something! Also, don’t forget that Toptenwholesale.com and its network of sites (manufacturer.com, wholesaleu.com, offpricenetwork.com) help buyers to connect directly with their wholesalers or manufacturer of choice. This is a great first step to ramping-up your SEO options!

I’m going to assume that you already know the basics of SEO… in fact, you’re probably implementing a number of advanced schemes already, as the holiday season approaches and makes those elusive clicks even more important than they are at just about any other time of year. However, there are a few things you could do to make your site a little more SEO-friendly, to direct that crucial traffic where you want it to land. Here’s a TopTen list of SEO ideas that will help you to clean up and streamline your site, just in time for the fearsome 2009 holiday season:

Time to reorganize, and get the place ready for party-time… after all, don’t you clean up and straighten out your home whenever you plan to entertain guests? Your site is an extension of your space, and whether it’s real or virtual… it’s got to have a new look for the occasion. On top of that, customers have different shopping habits right now than they do at any other time of the year. Liven up your site, and make it reflect the good times! This doesn’t mean you have to scrap your existing page code, but maybe just hook it up with keyword-rich anchor text over additional links that will pass page-rank to your most popular holiday categories and products. In addition, you can take measures to cut out the excess links by putting a link on your home page that sends visitors where they need to be, in one click instead of three or four.

Crank up the PPC… sounds like some kind of futuristic weapon from a sci-fi movie, doesn’t it? Pay-per-click advertising is good for advertisers who pay their host only when their ad is clicked… and even better for the rankings! This is crunch time, and there isn’t a lot of wiggle room on the calendar for companies who haven’t figured out that increasing your PPC adverts will also produce more traffic to your site. Customers will be clicking whether you put up an ad or not, so why not increase the chance that they’ll be directed to your site? Check out TopTenwholesale.com for PPC Ad opportunities.

Offer additional information that is useful and fun… a highly effective technique is to write an article or blog post on a specific product or service, because straight content ranks well in search engines and, as you probably know, content is everything for SEO. Get started and post a blog or comment on TopTenWholesale.com community blog.

Banner ads are good… sounds too simple to be included in this list, but it’s amazing how many companies forget this one. Back in the day, it used to be quite typical for magazine and newspaper adverts to skyrocket during the holiday season… now it’s the online version that’s getting all the attention. Put yourself in front of the customer by getting a banner ad out there. Toptenwholesale.com has a wide range of online banner ads that will get you in front of targeted buyer groups ready to purchase.

Meta tags and updates are small, but powerful… make sure that the most important key words you are targeting are listed in the beginning of the meta title! Since your title tags are probably structured by category, make sure they are ordered in importance. Since you’re promoting holiday goods and prices, don’t forget to dial-in your meta descriptions so that customers will quickly recognize the keywords they’re looking for. As the clock runs out, frantic shoppers will only be looking for the search responses that speak directly to them. Everything else is just noise.

Keep it simple… because quite frankly, the law of averages don’t care if your site is amazing… or a lifeless pile of HTML. Most of the clicks you actually do get will not lead to anything substantial, and that’s a fact. A good rule of thumb is to keep 80% of your link authority (page-rank) coming from 20% of your back links, which means that you should focus on building more of those strategic links that deliver more of your link authority. This is definitely not the time to try something big and crazy, but rather a time to use what already works… find the sites that have a nice stream of traffic, and see if you can’t get some of your content posted up there, for a mere link to your site as the payback. Bartering can be good for both of you, and it will crank up your traffic if you make friends with a high-ranking site!

Clean the place up… especially if you haven’t been doing it all year. Dead links, bad graphics files, and other detritus from the past can cause link splits and dead-end search results that don’t help you in the least. Simply cleaning up your internal linking structure can result in a higher ranking.

Don’t fear the audit… unless it’s the IRS at your front door! Seriously though, this is a good time to think about doing an overall assessment of your site’s ups and downs, and a time to take inventory of what is being used, and what’s not so useful anymore. Some sites are possibly under the annual code freeze right now, but you can still check basics like your customer contact form, live chat/customer service scripts, or other mechanisms that are in place. Go over the last few months of log files and site analytics, especially to turn up any 404 errors and other missing files.

It’s better to give than to receive… gifts, that is. Create some pages on your site that will promote the word “free” to your visitors… since everybody loves free stuff, right? This will be a tremendous boot to your page rankings, as long as you’re promoting the freebies actively.

Don’t forget the real world… If you live and breathe SEO, offline may be the furthest thing from your mind. Of course, there are other angles to the offline world. Hopefully you have the basic fundamentals covered, like making sure that your web address appears in all your mailings, advertisements, and anywhere else you may be marketing offline. If you have brick-and-mortar locations, it doesn’t hurt to remind people that you also have a website. Don’t forget that many of the traditional offline entities now have online presences themselves. TV news, radio stations, and newspaper reporters are often looking for interesting holiday stories, from the “most unusual” gift ideas to how to entertain for the holidays. Come up with an interesting story idea and you may not only get valuable airtime or print mention, but a link from their site to yours. Separate out, into “buckets,” those purchases that happened offline (e.g. phone orders) but that resulted from online marketing (i.e. were generated from natural search, from paid search, from print, etc.). You could even go more granular, beyond the referral source, and associate actual keywords (search terms) with these referral sources.

If you thought social networks and search engines were only for tweeting buddies and finding product suppliers anywhere in the world . . . guess again. The fact that people search for medical information online, and blog or Twitter about their flu symptoms even before they see a doctor, is now the latest way to track the spread of epidemics. Like H1N1, or swine flu.

Those lab workers at Shanghai Institute of Biological Products in China are developing possible vaccines that may protect people from the swine flu virus. But, before vaccines can be administered to the right people, the pandemic bug must be tracked down. Just like forecasting extreme weather.

Enter: Internet Detectives
Here’s where Internet Flu Watcher Programs come in, including Google’s Public Flu Trends System (see below), HealthMap’s automated hourly web crawler that searches for flu information in seven languages, and Maryland’s Resident Influenza Tracking Survey fed with voluntary weekly health reports sent over the Internet.

Some flu detectives are even keeping an eye on cell phones as a way of building those charts that show with whom, exactly, a flu carrier has been in contact.

Psssssst! You’re not paranoid. Your electronic devices ARE watching you!

FluLog proposes using Bluetooth (radio frequency) technology as a kind of Match.com for cell phones. Say you’re in a meeting room and you’re carrying one of two Bluetooth-enabled cell phones that discover each other. Then the presence of you and the other phone owner is logged into a secure central database. Should you -– or your cell phone’s friend — show up with swine flu symptoms, then public health officials can figure out from meeting data turned over by the phones which people are potentially at risk of exposure. Or, so says Mehul Motani from the National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Engineering.

You saw it here, first, at Top Ten Wholesale.

Sorry to gloat. But we told you about an amazing use of search engine technology in Google’s Public Flu Trends system last November 2008. See Search Technology Powerful Enough to Track Bugs from Top Ten Wholesale Blog.

Here’s one of Google’s plots of “sick” and “flu” search queries that was showing the location and spread of influenza outbreaks . . . long before Centers for Disease Control could compile information from state health officials.

All this is part of “infodemiology” -– a cross between the research disciplines of Informatics (Information Technology & Computers) and Epidemiology (Medical Spread of Disease through Populations). Except that, now, search engines and social media enable a far more active approach to managing disease outbreaks.

As Alessandro Vespignani, professor of informatics at Indiana University, said:

It’s not just . . . a passive approach, where we just wait for the disease and then try to do something.

It’s like doing weather forecasts in which you try to get all the initial conditions, and then you run your numerical models on the computer to try to anticipate what will be the evolution.

If we’re talking about that swiney H1N1, I say: Search, Blog, Tweet, Social Network and Track Away!

Looking for the magic bullet, or the lucky charm that instantly makes everything okay in this dangerous economic environment is not just a waste of time... but it will get you out of the race to successful wholesale and retail goals in a big hurry. So, what can you do? Read on to see what I have to say about China's part in all of this, and what you need to know in order to keep ahead of the competition...

Never before has there been a time of such uncertainty and economic instability in the USA. For the wholesale and retail business especially, this is where it all comes down to a strong finish for the fourth quarter, or a weak ending that leaves a lot of people wondering what happened. There’s going to be some winners, and a lot of losers… but the ones who lose big are going to be the ones who didn’t change their strategy, and relied on pure luck to squeak by in 2009.

It’s no secret that the US economy is practically made entirely from an enormous consumer base, and this makes it pretty important to keep spending up, even as the dollar continues its drop. However, countries around the world are showing signs of moving away from export trade… by instead internalizing their resources, in order to invest in themselves a little more. China is a prime example of this, and in the coming months things will only get more difficult for the wholesalers and retailers that are looking for easy deals through their Chinese partners and sources… until the next developing country takes the spotlight for being the cheap-labor center of manufacturing.

Have you looked at the Chinese netbook market?

Where did all that great 3G tech go?

It’s going to take a whole new outlook – coupled with a highly strategic plan – to make the numbers this time around. If this sounds like a harsh dose of reality, it’s only because it is. Does it mean you should throw in the towel? No, of course not… but it does mean that resources like Toptenwholesale.com (search a term like China some time) might become very valuable to you as you look for sourcing options and trends in the industry that lead to solutions!

Let’s talk about China’s changing economy, and the new obstacles in its path. Long gone are the heydays of making money just by sourcing from the cheapest Chinese manufacturers, and while this has affected the US economy substantially… it pays to keep an eye on what the PRC is doing about it. Here are four areas of interest that you should be very interested in, if you are currently doing business with China, and relying upon a trade relationship to fuel your wholesale engine.

Higher costs of labor, and environmental protection are resulting in higher prices from China’s export sector. Even though cheap labor is the foundation of the current Chinese economy, it’s a model that is quickly reaching its limit.

Saturation in the international markets is taking its toll. Too much of a good thing, or too many cheap things?

China has been involved in the world’s largest number of anti-dumping cases in recent years, and this has led to a big rise in trade protection, on the part of other countries that don’t like the way the game is sometimes being played.

There is a trade imbalance between China and other countries, and it is getting worse. As the RMB continues its climb in value, domestic companies are going to be faced with much bigger exchange risks in import or export-based trade.

What does it all mean to you? It means you had better find the good sources, quick! After all, this is not a passing trend or a fad, this is the truth… and those who face the truth first will be positioned to get the most from new strategies and relationships that form in the coming years. It also means that as many wholesalers fall to the wayside due to poor planning and bad choices, the winners will take the prize. Keep looking here for more, as Toptenwholesale.com continues to give you the news you need, so you can continue to Find it. Source it. Profit!

“The results I have received from TopTenWholesale are phenomenal! I have advertised with TopTenWholesale since 2005 and have received a high return on my investment. We highly recommend using TopTenWholesale, Wholesale U, OffPrice Network, Wholezilla, and any other JPC INC properties”

- Alain Sambouli, Via Trading

“I personally would like to thank TopTenWholesale for the significant growth we have received since 2005. We have been advertising with TopTenWholesale for the past 4 years and have seen a tremendous increase in our online orders and traffic. We continue to expand our presence with TopTenWholesale services because of the quality leads we receive.”

- Marc Joseph. CEO, Dollar Days INC

Stay on top of the news! Some popular and powerful methods for culling useful information can be found through sites like MarketingSherpa and ForresterResearch, to name a couple. It’s a lot of information, but boosting your business is worth the effort!

While I’m on the subject of light reading… here’s something to sink your teeth into: Vertical Search Reports. With condensed, no-frills, and heavy-hitting statistical content at your fingertips, these white papers will give you a real knife-edge when you’re cutting through the nonsense of a highly imperfect world. Take the time to read copies of SearchChannel and Slack Barshinger’s reports, or maybe subscribe to CONVERA’s e-consultancy report. These are amongst some of the papers out there that make up the real deal, and they are often available in international or country/region-specific versions as well.

Have you tried collecting your own email database list, and sending out promotional offers to your customers via email? Sure, it’s a lot of work, and takes a lot of time… and it will surely end up in the spam bin if the customer doesn’t perceive it as being valuable right away…

Hmmm, maybe you don’t have the time or energy to do a fully-featured, informative, and value-added newsletter on a regular basis? It sounds to me like you had better select another option, like doing a series of targeted Toptenwholesale.com email blasts, since we’re already doing them… and our current customers are quite happy with the results.

You should create in-house specials and holiday promotions (such as: free shipping, or a 15% e-coupon for $500 or more spent on an order), then advertise them with banner ads on your company’s site. Of course, promoting these special offers to a targeted demographic audience through some nice banner ads on Toptenwholesale.com can’t hurt either!

After you’ve designed and implemented a general-purpose banner ad on one of our sites (like Wholesaleu.com, Offpricenetwork.com, or Manufacturer.com), why not focus upon one particular market or demographic, to offer a response to a more specific challenge, or to provide a custom solution to a specific type of buyer? Sending an email out to your entire customer base with a special promotional offer for tracking purposes is fine, but giving extra attention where it really counts is the secret of success.

Last but not least, placing a directory listing on Wholesaleu.com or Offpricenetwork.com for only $299 for 6 months (which breaks down to about $49 per month for 6 months of targeted advertising!) instead of placing your ads within a traditional printed medium could be a real deal-maker. Have you ever tried to track results from magazine advertising? On the flip side, it’s pretty easy to do with online content. Besides, there is always a great chance that your advertising budget will be wasted on print, because it simply might not reach the desired demographic group in the first place… and you’ll never know about it, until you realize that those magazine ads didn’t turn anything up after all.

Go ahead, give us a call or send an email. For more information, contact a Marketing Specialist at sales@toptenwholesale.com to get the information you need, and the service you expect! Good luck, and happy wholesaling!

It’s official: Bing.com – Microsoft’s new search engine to replace its own 3rd ranked MS Live Search – passed former number 2 major search engine Yahoo! as of June 10.

bing Decision Logo

According to online user tracking by comScore, Hitwise and Stat Counter –

ComScore: With release of Bing.com at the end of May, Microsoft increased its share of the U.S. search market to 15.5% in only one week. That’s up almost 2% from comScore’s tracking data the week of May 26-30.

StatCounter: In classic horse-race lingo, StatCounter reported that Microsoft’s Bing had “overtaken” Yahoo Search for second place, with 16.28% of U.S. searches to Yahoo’s 10.22%.

Back at the horse track – MS Bing is now Place (2nd); Yahoo! Search is Show (3rd place). And, the winner? “Google still dominates the U.S. search market with 71.47% market share.”

Hitwise: Ranking more than 450,000 web sites, Hitwise claimed that Bing.com ranked “merely” fourth in its Search Engines category. Hmmmmm. But Hitwise did note that Bing came from behind (from ranking 5,120th for an empty placeholder web page before the new search engine was launched) to rank 17th among those half-million web sites a week later.

Got a Bad Case of “Search Overload”???

As for why Bing.com galloped ahead of 2nd place Yahoo! in barely 10 days, search engine watchers claim:

·	Microsoft has put $80,000,000 to $100,000,000 behind its Bing.com launch advertising campaign. That’s a very big marketing carrot that drives a lot of eyeballs.

·	Microsoft is making good on its promise to be a Decision Engine, where searchers are not buried in irrelevant web page results. Instead, Bing searchers find side-by-side listings of links and related resources … some that shout out what they contain in a mouse-over, so the searcher need not click thru every search result to find the answer they’re looking for.

·	Bing invites searchers to explore by channel – Images, Videos, Shopping, News, Maps and Local, Travel and Health.

·	Bing offers a “cure” for search overload. If you’ve seen any of that big ticket television advertising, then you know the tag line: What has Search Overload done to us?

The ads feature seemingly normal humans – a pregnant woman with her friend, a boy and his dad looking at high-priced flat-screen televisions, two friends eating lunch in a restaurant – who become zombies at the mere mention of a keyword. For example, the friend asking, “So, when is the baby due?” produces a flood of hits containing the word baby … including the useless fact that some live-bearing species of shark eat their babies after birth. (Whaaaaa? Forget Mother’s Day!)

Mention of plasma TV at the electronics store reduces the young boy to spouting definitions of plasma physics. And the keyword hits just keep coming faster and faster, until you can’t even hear the pile of keyword results spewing from various zombie mouths.

As a former ad agency creative director, I’d say this is a pretty clever hook. Microsoft is putting the “Bah-Dah BING” on a dirty little secret about search engines that ONLY match keywords:

You end up buried under a lot of useless, irrelevant results. However, when the search indexers (spiders) are coded up to find “natural language patterns” — or when what the search spiders find are double-checked by human and expert filters – then you’ve got the cure for Search Overload. Tah-dum. Or, bah-dah bing.

What? Me worry, Google?

Apologies to the old Alfred E. Neuman of Mad Magazine who tried to be nonchalant about everything, What? Me worry? But some search engine watchers actually claim 1st Place search engine giant Google is afraid of little Bing.com.

I don’t trust the source on this one, but rumor has it that Google co-founder Sergey Brin is so “rattled” by Bing’s recent launch, that Brin organized a Google update team to figure out how Microsoft’s – not in 3rd place anymore – Bing actually filters, cleans up and delivers useful search results.

(That’s from the New York Post, the celebrity gossip tabloid of record for sleepy subway riders and strap-hangers in metro Manhattan.)

But this, from Sterling Market Intelligence analyst Greg Sterling, is believable:

“Google may have all but dismissed Bing before it launched because of Microsoft’s search engine track record (and the fact that its old) Live Search wasn’t received with the same favor from analysts, investors and consumers as Bing.”

“I don’t think they are shaking in their boots at this point. But Google has to take a competitor like Microsoft very seriously because they have the capacity to invest millions of dollars into search. I wouldn’t be surprised if Google was taking a closer look and trying to reverse-engineer the algorithm and trying to assess how big it really is.”

Ahem.

Wholesale Business Searchers Don’t Like Search Overload Either

This seems like the right time to mention what Vertical and Business Search Engines do best. By their very structure and operation, Verticalized Business Search Engines sort and filter, slice and dice the piles of information overload that come up in purely keyword searches. Vertical SE’s work a specialized topic area of the big world wide web; and they use their own keyword search software – plus human specialists and expertise – to sort out irrelevant results.

Wholesalers, resellers, distributors and manufacturers don’t find much use for weird facts on baby-eating shark moms when they search for suppliers of baby clothing or women’s baby (maternity) apparel. Or, a business purchaser seeking a reliable liquidation specialist in consumer electronics who mistakenly types “plasma tee” into a search box would rather not scan the latest plasma physics research from Princeton.

If wholesale and business searchers go to the right search engines, they need not waste time going into search zombie overload either. Try these:

1. Top Ten Wholesale.com to zero in on over 50 Top Keyword categories, used by 10,000 business searchers per day, to locate wholesale distributors and product suppliers for resellers. Search by merchandise category or brand name … from Apparel, iPods, Fashion Sunglasses and Fragrances to Dollar Stores, Holidays, Airsoft, Leather, Jewelry and Toys.

2. Manufacturer.com to find offshore manufacturers, licensed wholesalers, exporters and Buyer/Seller listing exchanges for everything from consumer electronics, industrial/medical equipment and luggage … to men’s, women’s and children’s clothing makers; toy manufacturers, electronics components and licensed, branded manufacturers of gifts and crafts, timepieces and eyewear.

3. Off Price Network.com for a searchable wholesale supplier directory of the global discount marketplace. Apparel, Handbags, Fashion Accessories, Jewelry and Off-Price Merchandise – at every price point from Designer to Below-Wholesale Liquidation Lots.

Microsoft is now launching an improved search engine that upgrades the old Microsoft Live Search, while it streamlines consumer search into a buyer decision-making tool.

First public demonstration of the new search engine – code named Kumo in development – was at the D: All Things Digital conference in Carlsbad, California the last week of May. Kumo SE now travels under the search engine name Bing.

“Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated.”

The old Oscar Wilde quip, “Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated” — (Hellooooooo. I’m still here and kicking!) — could have come from the corporate mouth of Microsoft Corporation. You can’t pick up trade industry news these days that does not start with:

Microsoft ranks a distant third in Search Engine Wars.

Or: Almost 65% of all searches conducted in April 2009 were on #1 search engine Google (comScore). Yahoo! placed 2nd at 20.4%.

Followed by: Then there’s Microsoft, placing a distant third with only 8.2% of monthly search traffic.

And, it’s not just search engine popularity contests, either. A proposed ad-serving deal between the search prom king and queen – Google and Yahoo! – in Fall 2008 fell apart, after gossip about the deal being “anticompetitive” and “monopolistic” almost pushed #1 and #2 into antitrust hearings and couples therapy.

Yahoo! flirted for a while with a Microsoft buy-out offer. But that engagement ended badly. Yahoo! gave back the ring, though rumors say it’s still looking for a good merger. (No search engine prospects in sight as 2Qtr 2009 just ended.)

But who gets uncovered in the tabloids? Every Big Search Engine article leads with: “Persistantly 3rd-ranked search engine Microsoft today announced …”

Revenge of the Bing

Launching its new search engine, Microsoft explains what Bing does, why they did it and how it might help MS gain ground from its competitors.

·	Customers often don’t find what they’re looking for in searches.

The head of research at Microsoft’s Online Services Division, Satya Nadella, cited general search failure statistics in an internal development memo.

> 40% of search queries go unanswered;
> 46% of search sessions last longer than 20 minutes;
> Almost half of search queries are about quitting search (“searchers return to previous tasks”).

The search development team concluded that search users often do not find what they seek from search engines, and that users need search features to help them navigate through search results to reach a faster decision. The new SE in-progress was code named Kumo.

·	Kumo Goes Bing

Microsoft’s goal in developing a new search engine was to organize search results better so that users can find answers more quickly and waste less of their search time clicking through web pages.

It tested Kumo internally for months. Just last week, at D: All Things Digital, Kumo was introduced to the public and changed its name to Bing. As a replacement for Microsoft’s Live Search, Bing proposes to:

> Provide a better search experience that helps searchers accomplish tasks and organizes results in a way that saves search time;

> Displays an “explorer” pane on the left side of search results pages that accesses other tools related to the search;

> Offers search features like hover previews and single-session search histories;

> Approaches search as not just offering piles of information, but organizing the “best” results with tools that help users reach decisions … and make decisions based on search knowledge faster;

> With Bing, which Microsoft calls a “Decision Engine,” searchers can simplify their key tasks and find related resources and tools alongside search results. Bing incorporates other features from MS Live Search to help users make decisions, including Price Predictor (when to buy, for instance, an airline ticket to get the best price), and Microsoft’s Cash Back program, which co-ops with search advertisers to give buyers money back on their purchases.

We’re not holding our breath on new headlines in Search Engine Wars stories. Early testers of Microsoft’s new Bing search engine claim it does improve on the old MS Live Search engine. User time will tell.

In the folder labeled Conventional Wisdom, we can file what hits TV headlines:

· Conventional merchandise advertising channels, like metro newspapers and broadcast spots, are losing revenue to online marketing channels.

· Economic weakness, job losses and slowdowns in key industries caused disappointing Holiday 2008 sales and caution in consumer spending that ripples up the supply and demand chain.

But, what gets less play in economic bad news cycles is the unconventional results, such as:

· Online retail sales outperformed brick-and-mortar store sales for the 2008 shopping season. According to credit card network data on total sales for November-December, conventional store sales were down as much as 8% compared to 2007 … but online shoppers pulled back only 2% on their shopping.

· Citing Personal Electronics and Discount/Independent Merchandisers in particular, comScore (an online market tracker) concluded:

“A positive note is that e-commerce trends outperformed overall consumer spending in several product categories, which is to say that e-commerce continued to capture an increasing share of consumers’ wallets.” (comScore Chairman Gian Fulgoni)

· Then there’s data on the companies who plan to increase their advertising spending this year … but only in measurable and trackable online channels, like pay-per-click search ads and online ads that charge by the sales action or customer lead that they draw. (Vertical Search – B2B – Report 2009 e-Consultancy and Convera)

One of the biggest reasons for gloom & doom reports on failing newspapers or declining revenues for traditional advertising channels — versus the bright spots of online advertising and e-commerce — is also the reason why search advertising now outperforms even other online ad formats …

Search advertising reaches customers and buyers who started the transaction. They’re in active mode, searching for a product or brand, whether they are a retail customer or a wholesaler or a manufacturer.

Push Vs. Pull
This basic fact about search advertising is at the center of the difference between PUSH MARKETING strategies and PULL MARKETING techniques.

The traditional marketing approach is to develop a sales message that is pushed out to a mass audience through broadcast channels (TV, radio) and mass market print publications (newspapers, general interest magazines.) Push advertisers cannot insist that their message be heard. In fact, the first and most difficult step in traditional advertising is snagging the target audience’s attention. They didn’t ask for the ad. And even a captive audience for a popular TV show finds other things to do during commercial breaks.

In contrast, a PULL marketing technique attracts buyers or prospects who are self-selected and already interested. They’re pre-qualified potential customers because they are drawn to a seller based on their own actions and needs.

In search advertising, the potential buyer initiates the marketing message by requesting product information through questions, queries and keywords they enter into a search site. (Pull marketing has become even more flexible and customer-driven when those search questions are entered on a smart phone, Blackberry or other mobile device.)

Pull Marketing Through Vertical Search

This pull vs. push benefit of search advertising doesn’t work only at the retail customer end of the chain. Search sites and search engines that serve specialized industries and professions pull buyers and sellers from every level – manufacturers, wholesalers and import/exporters … academics, researchers, licensing boards and manufacturing reps … national chain store merchandise buyers, distributors and small online auction entrepreneurs.

Specialized and industry-focused search sites are called Vertical Search Engines. Because of their expert community focus, vertical search sites tend to offer better buyer prospects and higher rates of conversion-to-sale. Comparing results from advertising on vertical search sites against ads run on broad consumer-focused (i.e., mass audience) search sites, an analyst at Forbes.com noted:

Advertisers on vertical sites are able to reach potential customers who are much closer to making a purchase decision than the average user on Google or Yahoo.

Kelsey Group Analyst Greg Sterling, Forbes.com

Now that we know search advertising outperforms nearly every other paid marketing effort, online or offline, the next step is to create successful search ads. We’ll look at copywriting, keywords, different search ad formats and costs in an upcoming issue of Top Ten Wholesale Newsroom.

Other SEM – Search Engine Marketing – resources include:

1. Keywords: How to use keywords on web pages, in links, in search ads to gain traffic, click-through, search results page rankings and maximum attention.

See Right Keywords Lead Prospects to the Right Stuff .

2. Personalize Search Ads With Dynamic Keyword Tool .

3. If you’re a merchandise or apparel wholesaler, scan the search ad, display ad, directory listings and other marketing opportunities on the JPC network, which includes: Vertical search sites Top Ten Wholesale.com and Off-Price Network.com; Product directory listings in Wholezilla and WholesaleU; plus Wholesale-Only Blogs and information-sharing sites.

See Advertising at TopTenWholesale .

4. If you’re a manufacturer, importer/exporter or wholesaler interested in reaching a global marketplace and accessing opportunities in China, see directory and sponsored listings, plus search marketing opportunities, through Manufacturer.com Business Search Engine.

1. Every Business Needs to Be Online … Even Locals

True Fact: 44-to-50% of small businesses have no web site or online presence.

Reasons for going “web-less” these digital days seem perfectly reasonable:

· Number One: “It costs too much to hire professional web site designers.”
· Number Two: “I’m a local retailer or service provider. Why should I be on the world wide web?”
· Number Three: “I’m too busy running my business. Who has time to keep up a web site and answer emails?”

Not Being Online Costs You Even More. A bigger risk these days to your business survival is being invisible to potential customers who do all their product searches on virtual (online) feet … including the locals. Don’t believe it? Listen to Michael Schultz, who (in the interests of full disclosure) is the marketing director for Microsoft Office Live Small Business unit:

“Independent entrepreneurs wonder why they need a site, and think word of mouth is working, but I can’t see how anyone can compete without being online. With everyone using search engines and social media, if you don’t have a site, you’re not in business.”

Are you a local retailer with a carefully built brand name, who sticks with tried and true old ways of doing business?

“Local business is the last, vast untapped piece of online marketing space,” noted Kevin Ryan of WebVisible. “It’s very difficult to convince a small business that, in the eyes of a search engine, their brand doesn’t have nearly the value they think it does … because even local buyers will go to an online source – a search engine, the Yellow Pages directory – first. They rarely conduct a search using the name of a local business; rather they type in keywords, like plumber or diamond jewelers, plus their zip code.”

Even when the locals know your name, if you’re web-less, you’re invisible at the moment they decide to buy.

WebVisible and Nielsen Research surveyed U.S. Internet users last November on how they find local businesses. Results: Number 1 choice of both customers and small business owners when looking for a product or service was online search. Yet, one-half of all small businesses spend less than 10% of their marketing budgets on Internet ads. What’s wrong with that picture? And how can you fix it?

2. Get DIY and Low-or-No-Cost Professional Web Pages

Do-It-Yourself and low-cost web building tools offer templates that walk you — step by step — through basic web page design and are no more technical than dragging and dropping pieces of a word processing file. You work through your browser and answer questions about your business, products or services. Web page Wizards build your site.

Basic web set-up tools are free; but you can add low-cost options for premium services, such as to register your own custom domain (web address) from your business name, to use online advertising or email marketing services, or to offer online payment processing (such as PayPal) and shopping cart checkout services to your customers.

Free and Low-Cost Web Design Tools:
· Microsoft Office Live for Small Business – free site hosting, design templates, web use reports.

· SynthaSite – free basic web design tools such as templates, web storage and page serving.

· Intuit Web – “If you’re particularly design challenged, don’t panic – tapping into some design expertise to get you started doesn’t have to cost you thousands of dollars. Intuit’s Web Sites service can be had for just under US $600.” (Frank Loeffler, Director of Intuit Product Marketing)

· Assign working with online templates and tools to an Internet-savvy staffer. If you Do It Yourself, you only pay a monthly web hosting fee, which could be as little as US $5 per month.

· Get step-by-step web design advice – for free – from sites like: Microsoft.com, Intuit Web and Website Design Basics.

· Don’t forget customer feedback and contact tools, even if you don’t have time while running your business to respond instantly. These “data capture” services are free or low-cost. You set them up to automatically respond to a potential customer immediately … until you can provide more personalized service.

1. At FormAssembly.com, you fill in the required fields for web site customer data collection. Then, whenever a web visitor comes to your site and fills out the “Contact Us” form, they get an instant Auto Reply … which may include answers to Frequently Asked Questions about your products or business (such as whether you sell wholesale or if you carry wedding jewelry under a certain price). You can even conduct surveys on your web site to learn customer preferences, what’s in demand in your product category, what’s hot and what’s not.

Veer West, developers of free FormAssembly, captures all the customer contact information and reports summaries of it to you at their web site. (If your customer traffic levels are above a certain high level, then you can opt for a subscription plan that begins at $9 per month.)

2. Wufoo, by Infinity Box, is another free customer feedback site tool (depending on monthly volume). You decide how this customer contact form will appear on your site: As a “paste in” or “drag ‘n drop” onto your web page; through a clickable link on your site that takes a visitor to a fill-in form customized to your business; or – for the technically comfortable – by downloading the source code for Customer Contact from Wufoo and inserting it into your web page coding.

Wufoo gives you the option of getting traffic/customer contact reports by email or by signing in to the Wufoo web site for an online report.

Advantages of using these low- and no-cost forms services: –Data collected is kept private and secure. –Your business email address is not SPAMMED with unsolicited junk email. -–You spend your time running your business and still respond promptly to customer inquiries.

3. K.I.S.S … Calls-To-Action … Local Addresses

· Resist the temptation to load up your home page with lots of pretty but meaningless graphics. Or EVERYTHING you sell. Or too many different colors, typefaces and hyperlinks. It looks paste-pot, cluttered and makes a bad First Impression.

Speaking of First Impressions. Web Usage Statistic: A web surfer spends 5 seconds (count ‘em, FIVE) after clicking to your web site deciding whether they should stay and look around … or click the Back Button to go to the next listing on their Search Engine Results Page.

A classic design principle – for online and printed marketing materials – is K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple, Stupid) Think of your home page as a navigation compass: Concise, Relevant. Short Bullet-Points of Copy/Text. Clear Links to inside pages of your site. (Linked inside pages are where prospects find product details, prices, and extra information that not all visitors want to see.) Hence, don’t clutter the top page with everything you’ve got!

· Put a Call-to-Action on every single web page … not just your home page. These are the BUY NOW buttons that go to a checkout or shopping cart page. They might be a CONTACT US button – like the forms and data capture services noted above – to get more detailed information or a special discount price code or a giveaway item.

· The fastest growing area of online search is happening at the Local and Regional levels: Mobile phones with Internet access (like iPhones) search for Thai food restaurants in a specific area. Or, they let price-conscious shoppers compare prices against a Big Box retail store’s sale-priced sporting goods or unannounced discount on electronics. A customer ready to buy the latest carry-all canvas bag may have seen a nationally advertised brand in a TV ad for the local mall store, or in a magazine. But, that same prospect does a local search on “totes” and “canvas bags” in your zip code/city to find it and buy it.

Local Newspapers, TV Stations, City Directory Listings, Yellow Pages run by the regional telecommunications company, Commercial Directories run by cable operators, Yellow Book Online … as well as the Local Search sites within big search engines like Google, Yahoo! and Microsoft … offer free and paid-ad listings. If the search engine indexers – called spiders – don’t “see” a local address and a local telephone Area Code on your web site, then they don’t know you’ve got the latest bag or jewelry or sunglasses right here in (fill in City).

Your email, phone number, contact us links AND storefront address should be on every web page in the same place … preferably at the very top and bottom of the page, where all search indexing spiders can “see” it. Important: Don’t put any local or call-to-action information inside a graphic or image. The indexing spiders are blind to images. Text only.

4. Entry-Level Wholesale Solutions

If you prefer a turn-key, start-up enterprise, you can buy any-sized packages that give you a web presence, marketing services and online ordering systems, as well as inventory, and moves you up the product supply chain. At different levels of start-up resale programs -– and for different package prices — you become a merchandise reseller, supplying other retailers or direct-to-customer markets.

One example of such a turn-key merchandise resale program comes from Concord/Advanced e-Media, which merged experience with wholesale supply, shipment and inventory control (from Concord’s Dollar Items) with an e-commerce solutions provider (Advanced e-Media) , to provide turn-key web sites, ordering systems, virtual storefronts and marketing). Concord/e-Media offers 3 scaled wholesale storefronts as Complete B2B Web Packages, tailored to supply dollar, discount, convenience and chain stores, plus independent retailers and specialty gift stores..

5. Localizing the World Wide Web and Moving Into the Global Supply Chain

· Successful small businesses choose not to sell online; but they keep an active web presence to communicate with loyal customers, attract new ones, and stage special marketing events.

The New York Times reported last December that small businesses were taking creative approaches to luring customers during the holiday spending slowdown, by focusing on special events and online social networking. A specialized lingerie store, Seventh Goddess in New Mexico, used its page on social community site Facebook to publicize a “Sex and the City” party (from the hit fashionista film of 2008), complete with lingerie fashion show.

An Independent Bookstore – local endangered species in this age of mega-chains and “Amazons” – offers film screenings and book readings, all publicized through City Online Social Networks, Web Invites and Emails to its list of loyals, plus through a Facebook page, and from literate “followers” on the store’s instant message alert system, via Twitter.

Then there’s the Seattle Mystery Bookshop – mysteries only – whose owner has had a web site for 10 years. He started the web site “just to have an online presence” in the late 1990s. It has evolved into a Quarterly Newsletter, updated Calendar of Events for Author Signings; and now a shop Blog, with the mystery-loving staff’s Special Picks. Owner J.B. Dickey likes having a virtual village site, even when the shop is closed. (Web sites operate 24/7/365.)

By choice, Seattle Mystery Bookshop’s web site has no shopping cart … a level of security and expertise on which Dickey did not want to spend money. Still, his store web site is an inexpensive investment: He pays a contractor to run the site and update it, while he runs his specialized Indie Bookstore.

· Finally, a web presence, plus online product sourcing, can level the playing field between large wholesalers and small savvy business entrepreneurs.

If your business works at a Wholesale/Reseller level, you can list your business, often for free, at vertical (industry) search sites and searchable product directories. Many offer Buyer/Seller posting forums and allow qualified companies to automatically update their product listings to display price changes, new inventory and special sales.

An example in the wholesale merchandise sector – covering product categories or brands from apparel and Abercrombie to electronics, toys and Louis Vuitton – is Wholezilla. This searchable catalog of wholesale suppliers is part of the Top Ten Wholesale network of search engines, product directories, ad serving sites, industry news and blogs. See Wholezilla for a list of the most popular and searched keywords at the site, to sign up for an Account and to set up Product Feeds.

You can search at specialized industry search sites to source products for your business at up to 70% below wholesale prices. Add to your product category search keywords such as “off-price” “discount” and “value-priced” merchandise. Look for an increasing number of Manufacturers and Wholesalers who offer “No Minimum Orders,” who break typical wholesale quantities – by the pallet, by the truckload – into smaller quantities, and who specialize in Returned and Liquidation Merchandise.

Online product sourcing at specialized vertical search sites is one way smaller business can leverage discount priced inventory. See Top Ten Wholesale and search for product suppliers who meet your criteria in nearly 100 product categories.

See also a new consumer-targeted site from a pioneer in the large lot liquidation and returned merchandise industry, GENCO. Their direct-to-customer site, No Better Deal features No Minimum Order sizes with deep-discount-pricing, (the latter used to be only for major wholesalers). These industry search sites and product directories scale to the demands of both major manufacturers and small business owners.

All the above is why online business presence is considered the best way to level the playing field in a globalized and tighter economy. As Michael Schultz from Microsoft said: “… If you don’t have a site, you’re not in business.”
