Swiss watch exports have enjoyed a good start to the year, with sales booming in the USA and Europe, with particularly good sales in France. These sales come at a time when a drop in sales activity at Hong Kong’s biggest marketplace had traders and buyers pausing for a moment to anticipate the worst, and especially at a time when holiday sales would no longer be the fallback on a poor month of earnings.

Swiss sales of luxury watches and related accessories rose over 14% during January, and the numbers represent a substantial gain over figures generated during the same month a year before. In fact, if today’s inflationary figures were to be applied to the gains, there was actually a 16% increase this year.

No bad. But before anyone starts breaking out the bubbly, and celebrating the fact that revenue was on the upswing, let’s take a closer look at what brands were doing the winning, and which styles of watches are in demand in the first place. Since not all watches are really exactly alike in form or function, there will be some differences that stand out in the consumer mind, that should be well noted by those who wish to capture sales in these areas.

With Swatch Group AG, Compagnie Financière Richemont SA, and Rolex being the main stable of producers, there remains a strict loyalty to the companies in Hong Kong, and in other parts of the world where these brands are the first choice for buyers who want fashionable style with a sophisticated touch. However, with sales suffering a recent tumble, the search for markets that can maintain the companies and their expected gains will be a new development in the story, as everyone watches to see what the outcome is.

Experts in the business say that figures are solid, and continue to show promise, according to a recent survey conducted to come up with a few hard numbers to judge the market by. However, the main focus of the companies will continue to be the hunt for a solution to a growing problem of declining sales in Hong Kong, and what can be done sooner, rather than later, to alleviate it.

Some are stating that the Chinese New Year being a bit earlier this year was a source of misinformation on the part of western companies, since they didn’t pay attention to the fact that these numbers would be skewed in favor of the lunar calendar. New rates will not impact companies with pre-negotiated rates until their current contracts are due for renegotiation.  The increased rates do not affect parcels shipped by Express Mail or Priority services.

It has been nearly two years since the last rate changes.  The USPS posted a fiscal loss of $8.5 billion for the first quarter of 2011; the U.S. Postal Service is in dire need for additional revenue.  Total mail volume has increased 1.5% or 707 million pieces from the first quarter of 2010 to the first quarter of 2011, but the increased revenue from Standard Mail is not sufficient to offset the losses incurred from First Class Mail.  Total Mail Volume remains far below the 2006 peak.

FedEx and UPS, the largest competitors to the U.S. Postal Service, also experienced rate hikes averaging 5.9% in the early part of 2011.  However, the fuel surcharge reductions drop the increases to 4.9% for UPS and 3.9% for Federal Express.

According to the U.S. Department of Commerce, the United States wants to work with China to expand the global economy and promote the development of the green economy. The Department wants to promote exports of leading U.S. technologies related to clean energy, energy efficiency, and electric energy storage, transmission and distribution. California has shown an interest in promoting green technologies, with former Governor Schwarzenegger promoting it as an important statewide initiative.

California manufacturers can explore ways to increase sales through the Green Export Enabler Program (GEEP). This program is offered through various training centers in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Commerce, the Export-Import Bank of the United States and California Manufacturing Technology Consulting. GEEP seeks ways to increase global competitiveness and exports in California green technologies to China by using a 7-step process to help California companies enter and develop the markets in China, increasing their market exposure and establishing effective representation in China for ongoing export sales.

Over $3 billion in venture capital money was invested in California clean-tech companies in 2008, which was over 57 percent of all U.S. investment in the green sector. California has the highest number of patents in the solar, wind and battery industries. Energy productivity (total GDP produced per unit of energy) is 68 percent higher in California than in the entire U.S. Additionally, California generates $2.17 in GDP for every 10,000 BTU of energy it uses, compared with $1.29 for every 10,000 BTU of energy used by the entire country.

There is potential for green export growth in China because China has a great need for clean energy, air and water due to pollution. Additionally, China is best able to afford the massive investment and imports to meet this need. Under the Chinese Government’s $585 billion Economic Stimulus Plan, $105 billion alone is slated for rural area water safety projects, urban wastewater treatment, key water body pollution control and ecological environment protection. The Government projects an increase in China’s green technology market from $186 billion in 2010 to $555 billion in 2020. Chinese projects already underway or planned for the future offer a big opportunity for California green technology companies.

There is no cost to GEEP clients for counseling because of a three-year federal Market Development Cooperative Program agreement from the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Department offsets the $7,500+ market value of the Green Export Enabler Program by offering it at an entry cost of $1,000, which is more than offset by a $1,500 subsidy applied toward export promotion services provided by the Department.

Prospective customers are more likely to kick the tires and do more shopping around for alternatives before signing on the dotted line, after reading the news of the company’s alleged involvement in defrauding thousands of customers with phony storefronts, some operating as far back as five years ago, or longer. A source in Alibaba’s home city of Hangzhou – who refused to be named – stated quite frankly that “it [has been] known by insiders for years that fraud exists in many years on Alibaba. [It happens] with factory owners having friends and families open accounts to fake Chinese companies having a gold supplier membership with the only [aspiration] of stealing your money.”

When contacted for a statement of his own, Jason Prescott, CEO and founder of JP Communications, said “This is indeed very unfortunate for Alibaba. Jack Ma built a truly great company, but it is now quite clear that a new industry standard is needed. It will be years before trust is regained again, and Alibaba, which was already having a hard time penetrating the enormously valuable USA marketplace, will find itself with yet another major obstacle to overcome.”

Industry insiders in Hangzhou and abroad are already speculating that Alibaba’s spin doctors very quickly put forth the news in an effort to suppress the possibility of a firing taking place, instead of a voluntary resignation.

Recent news that has plagued the Internet giant includes accusations that Alibaba has formed an oligopoly amongst Chinese enterprises, as Baidu and Tencent have been named in a collective sweep of enterprises that currently make up over 70 percent of the total market value of all listed Internet companies in China.

Chinese finance website Hexun reported the findings Friday, citing that “the three Internet giants hold stable monopolized positions in the sectors of search engines, instant messaging and e-commerce, respectively, which poses challenges to the interests of Internet users, the prosperity of the industry and government supervisions.”

In 2010, the total market value of Baidu, Alibaba (only B2B business) and Tencent reached US$77.4 billion, according to Chinalabs’ calculations.

Wei and Lee, who, according to Alibaba, “weren’t involved in any of the activities that led to claims by buyers of fraudulent suppliers,” resigned in a display of personal responsibility for the “systemic breakdown in the company’s culture of integrity,” according to a company statement today.

Sources inside the industry were riveted by the news, as leaks from within Alibaba’s corporate headquarters in Hangzhou, China, hit the streets.

While many were cautious with accepting the first inkling of news, others were not surprised to find out that the Internet giant, which has seen a marked drop in its revenue stream from non-government sources since the middle of last year, was cleaning house.

A tour of California’s Silicon valley and outlaying areas late last year by company founder Jack Ma was a sign that something was about to happen, some experts speculate. While the highly celebrated and often animated poster boy for China’s tech revolution was culling talent from the top schools in the USA, things were apparently not so certain back at home in China.

No official statement has been made by the company, but reports are already coming in that there may be an announcement in the next few days.

Taking a loser look at gold, and taking into consideration that prices have shot up over 30% in the last year, it’s no surprise that creativity comes to the rescue, as dealers and designers are looking for ways to please their clients without giving them sticker shock at the checkout line. With a prevailing mentality of value becoming a greater factor as the prices become steeper, it makes sense for startups and small operations to focus on the wholesale market instead of trying to sell Chanel and Tiffany.

Although professionals in the industry should refrain from getting too hopeful about seeing baseball-sized rocks and “bling” making is big comeback, there will undoubtedly be an increase in discretionary spending amongst consumers of all demographic groups, and this will, in turn, give the companies that provide Wholesale Jewelry something to cheer about.

Everything from socks to undies are going to cost a bit more in the coming months,and it’s not a welcome change for most retailers who will be affected by the increases. Of course, this doesn’t mean that consumers will simply stop buying clothing; it’s a given that the fashion show must go on. All is not lost, though. As labor experiences a rise in wages, the quality of goods is certain to be on the upswing as well. In countries like China, the evidence is visible to anyone who shops at local markets in first and second-tier cities on the east coast. Better working conditions mean better work from laborers, and the products hitting the streets are reflecting that factor with better goods for consumers both on the mainland and abroad.

Another big turnaround will be for the textiles manufacturers who produce synthetic materials for apparel, as their production methods haven’t seen earth shattering changes, and their demand for threads and fabrics made from materials other than cotton will also be looking better every day.

In the last two decades, there has been a tremendous deflation in the price of clothing, a trend that is about to reverse in the days to come. Natural fabrics made from cotton and other organic materials will be first to move in the upward direction. Consequently, the price of synthetics may go up due to demand, but it’s going to produce opportunities for markets that have been waiting for their chance to provide cheap sources for those fabrics. Now may be that time.

The good news to all of this industry shake-up is that the next crop of cotton plants will help to correct any turbulence in the market, and prices are expected to dip again, once supply exceeds demand.

Although Levi Strauss, JC Penney, and Hanes have announced plans to raise prices this year, there hasn’t been much fallout on the streets. Consumers who were asked about the price hikes said they would be “looking out for increases,” but are not willing to “skimp in some areas, like underwear.” Wholesale Clothing might even become “a really attractive alternative” for some.

Inflation is the buzz word of the day, but it doesn’t mean people will stop wearing clothes. While many areas of the wholesale industry have experienced unusual post-holiday sales activity, the humble t-shirt has seen steady sales in most categories, with the added bonus of increased sales in certain markets as well. Then there’s the question of rising prices. Even giant retailing entities like Abercrombie & Fitch can’t escape the notion, as they have announced that their prices will be going up this year. Another recent upset to watch out for is the failure of Liz Claiborne to succeed in putting a new line of designer t-shirts into the swim of things. Wholesalers have been quick to snap up the castaways, and the retail segment of the company has even been forced to limit – and in some cases, close out – underperforming brands in its repertoire of items that get sent to retail outposts nationwide. Even Claiborne’s biggest women’s line called Juicy Couture, has seen a drop in sales. Pop-icon and rock-themed t-shirts were also amongst the items scheduled for cleanup, as the company’s sweep of sprawling merchandise continued. Lucky Brand, a brand known well amongst the teen and young adult demographic, is suffering at the hands of better prices and equal selection from online sellers and wholesalers who have the goods in demand that are making their impression felt. The company, which also owns the Kate Spade brand, has reported a need to adjust losses from continuing operations with the brand as well. Things have reached a point where the company’s representatives have stated that they will have to manage inventory levels much more carefully this year, in order to avoid a price-slashing initiative in Europe and North America, even though price is number one on the minds of consumers in both markets.

The T-shirts Wholesale business is getting to be a real boom time for wholesalers, especially in light of companies like Claiborne, which have also stated that they breached “threshold levels” this year.
