Long seen as a poor country, Ethiopia is now moving ahead as not only an apparel sourcing destination, but also a place for footwear production as well. Many countries, including the United States, Canada, Japan and the EU are looking to Ethiopia because the footwear that comes from Ethiopia is duty-free and that means big savings for retailers. Currently, China provides the most amount of footwear to the United States, and by a large margin, but other countries like Vietnam are catching up. Currently, 16.2 per cent of footwear comes from Vietnam, up five per cent from a decade ago. This year alone, more than two million shoes will be coming from Ethiopia, and that is going to keep increasing. By 2020, 22 per cent more shoes will come from Ethiopia to the United States. This makes Ethiopia the number one destination for footwear from the United States in all of Africa.
