German Company Birkenstock, famous for its footwear, has recently announced that it will be adding a furniture line to its collection. In an announcement made at the IMM Cologne International Interiors Show, Birkenstock representatives stated that the company will be introducing a line of mattresses, bed frames and wood-slat bases. The company also posted the news to Instagram. Founded in 1774, Birkenstock has become known for its wide range of shoe styles. More notably, the company’s cork-latex soles have been used to manufacture the iconic sandals which made the brand famous. These footbeds will be the basis for the materials used in the footwear producer’s line of furniture. In a recent report by Dezeen, Birckenstock has not yet announced a launch date for its new product line. However, the company has stated that it will manufacture sleep products which are designed to enhance sleep comfort, just as their sandals are designed to promote foot comfort. Style and utility are also considerations, as leather details will accentuate headboards and allow for storage of reading material. Accents to the furniture also include soft wool felt. Dezeen is a renowned publication on architecture and interior design. Birkenstock has long been known for its exceptional quality, but also for the diversity of its end users. While the shoes have become a token of “hippie” culture, Birkenstock seeks to alter this image with its new furniture line. The company has offered a sneak peek at its new collection, and the products are just as diverse as its intended markets. Bed styles range from soft browns and rustic suedes to more modern lines. The company has not announced any additional furniture lines.
