Based in Amherst,Ohio, Jamie’s, pronounced as ‘Ja-mays’, is one of the oldest traditional flea markets that has been running for about half a century. It currently has around 200 indoor spots and up to 500 outdoor spaces on 12 acres of open space. The flea market is open all year around during Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
The historic flea market in South Amherst houses vendors selling old and new merchandise, from high-end antiques and collectibles to lower end used merchandise and brand new items.
“The market was started in 1974 by my grandfather, William Jamie, as an auction house,” says Jamie’s Flea Market general manager Lorna Ingersoll. “It has changed a lot over the years. We have a lot more competition now, with dollar stores, Wal-Mart and Target, but our flea market has done well because we have remained traditional. We still get the crowds. It still seems to be the place people want to come.”
The flea market business was later bequeathed to Ingersoll’s parents, and then acquired by the Mock family a few years ago.
“It has changed a lot over the years. We have a lot more competition now, with dollar stores, Wal-Mart and Target, but our flea market has done well because we have remained traditional. We still get the crowds. It still seems to be the place people want to come,” Ingersoll continues.
The market is located on Route 113 between Cleveland and Toledo, about 45 minutes away from the west of Cleveland.
Jamie’s also supports various local causes, fundraisers and charities as part of its effort to give back to the community.
Flea Market Flip Contest
“In September, we are doing a Flea Market Flip contest based on the Flea Market Flip HGTV show. Customers can purchase an item from our market, and take it home and create something else out of it. They will win cash and gift certificates,” reveals Ingersoll.
Shoppers need to fill out the online application form in order to join the contest, which will take place on September 28th. The grand prize winner will get the chance to take home $75 in cash and $75 worth of Jamie Dollars
“It is a great market to sell at,” Ingersoll continues. “We have had several vendors here for many, many years. It is a great place to start or grow an existing business.”
